I wanted to share this one my DS (age 11) said yesterday: "Dogs have evolved alongside humans for so long that they share some of our language and sense of right and wrong and they are part of our family.  If you looked at it as religion instead of science, it's as if God expelled humans from the Garden of Eden for biting the apple, and dogs chose to take a bite, too, and be thrown out with us because they love us so much.  They don't get to just be a wild animal, and we don't even give them credit for what they have done for us."  I was kind of awed with how profound this statement was about our relationship with animals.

Share with me some of the metaphors your kids have made.

Busy keeping up with three children and an awful lot of chickens!

Interesting thoughts.  Dogs have not properly evolved alongside humans since domestication, but rather have been bred, but certain behavioral traits have certainly been selected for during that process.  Thanks for sharing.

Was the NOVA program Dogs Decoded? We found it to be fascinating. If anyone is interested it is on Netflix Instant and I don't remember anything inappropriate for elementary school aged kids.

I'll have to check it out!  I'm sure DS will be excited.  Let me know any of your own children's analogies.  It can be so surprising what they think of.

It probably was dogs decoded... we didn't watch the whole thing, so I can't say for sure. The part we watched was talking about this guy studying whether humans can understand different dog barks and their meaning (they can).
