My dd (7) has been accepted to the VSB Gifted/Challenge program for the summer and I'm feeling torn. It's three weeks long from 9 to noon. Although she really wants to go and I'm happy she'll have the opportunity to nurture her love of math and science, I also am a bit reluctant to have her sitting in a classroom for so much of the summer.

Does anybody have any personal experience with this program? I'd love to hear what you thought and how your child enjoyed it.

I'm sorry, I have no experience. But I'm curious about the nuts and bolts of the program, and eligibility for it. Is it open to any kid in the province, or just VSB kids? What age kids does it cover? The reason I ask is that I have a 10yo in the BC interior where there is no gifted programming whatsoever, and she is just desperate for an intensive school-like experience with kids like herself. In her case she's unschooled and definitely not sitting in a classroom during the regular school year and summers are her favourite time for intensive workshops. So far we've had to make do with sports and arts programs but she'd love something more intellectual and academic.

Hope you get feedback from someone who knows more (not less, like me!) about the program than you do.

Hi Miranda,

Apparently all BC students with a personal education number may apply. Here's some more info. The course descriptions look quite fun.

Thanks! Good to know! Have PEN, will travel. We're already booked up with stuff for this summer, and renting a place to stay would be expensive, but we'll keep it in mind for future summers.

If you do end up registering your dd, I'd love to hear about your experiences, and about the level of challenge. From the website they're quite adamant that your child register in their current grade-year. My dd is registered in Grade 4, but finishing the BC Math 8 and Science 8 curriculum. Hopefully these classes would still be a good fit for her in another year, when we might be able to swing it financially and organizationally.

FWIW, this is intriguing to me too.  This looks a bit like the summer school programs in other parts of the Lower Mainland (although where I am there doesn't seem to be a gifted program).

Miranda, there may be something with gifted programming that is closer to where you live, if you look into it (or you could get your local school to do something next year - it looks like provincial funding.  Here is something for the school to submit for funding on the Ministry site).  I wonder if my DL "school" would be interested in running something like this.  Hmm...

All BC residents are allowed.

It's possible there's something closer, but I'd be surprised. As far as I've been able to discover Vancouver has the closest congregated gifted classrooms and the districts close to me have no gifted programming at all. Things are very rural here: our DL program has 8 students and our school has 90. So that's fewer than 100 students, K-12, within a 45 minute drive. The district takes 2.5 hours to drive end to end and has only about 600 students total. I can't imagine there would be a market for summer programming of any sort.

ETA: I found one nearby school district (4.5 hours away) that offers summer school programs, but all the course descriptions are "for students who need additional reinforcement of skills before proceeding to the next level." Nothing for gifted / advanced / enrichment kids.

Congratulations on being accepted! But man is it ever lame that this is offered in July! Summer really is only 2 months here and I wouldn't want my child sitting in a classroom during that precious time. It's such a shame that more programs aren't offered during the school year.
