Hi everyone, I'm Russell and I'm a stay-at-home dad for our little one named Damien. My wife works a demanding job, so I get to spend most of my day raising him. I'm posting this to the "gifted child" section because I'm curious to get some specific feedback on that topic...
Before this comes out as me swooning over my son, know that I want to roll my eyes along with many whenever a parent talks about how "advanced" their child is. But, as new parents, we hadn't really realized until doing a little research just how far along our little guy has been all along -- especially regarding communication.
In short, at 8 months, he now has a clear vocabulary of the following words (which he defines in referencing/seeing/asking for objects: milk, book, ball, basketball (ba-ba-ba), diaper, bird, doggie, da-da, ma-ma, airplane, and a few others. He'll try to mimic just about any word if you work on him for 30 seconds with it. He also makes his toys fly around the room while saying "vroom."
His word for "milk" is the most unique. It comes out as "emmmm-uh" and he has been saying it since he's been 2 months old. When we've told other parents that, their jaws drop. It's always made things really easy in knowing when he's hungry. I'm a pretty humble person, so skeptical (at best) when considering our little guy as "advanced" or "gifted," but starting to wonder if we should/could be doing anything to help in his development even more if he perhaps is.
I've read that reading books to him, using diverse vocabulary, eye contact, and responding to his communication are great things, but is there more? Should he be tested? See a specialist?
He's always been a little ahead of the curve… reactive smiling at 2 weeks, rolling over 360 degrees at 3 months, and crawling by 6 months. Not sure if those play in at all. So, I'm just looking for some feedback from anyone with ideas -- especially parents who went through these stages with kids who ended up being gifted.
Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this community!
