Our DD is 5.5 yrs old and in Sr. Kindergarten. We have 2 years of kindergarten here starting with the year a child turns 4.
We had our teacher meeting this evening and heard from her teacher that she is quite advanced. This is something that we already know, but it is different hearing it from a teacher. The teacher has said that she believes our child is gifted but would not be tested until grade 2, or possibility at grade 1 if we and the teacher requested it. We have thought that she is quite bright and would probably need some advancement and accommodation in school. But never really thought about giftedness.
She has said that she is advanced in reading, writing, math, shapes, science, comprehension, basically everything.
So far the teacher has been accommodating her with more advanced work. She has her writing sentences, reading grade 2 level books to the teacher, learning about and talking about and using more advanced shapes, more advanced math, etc.
We are really not sure where to go from here to help keep our child stimulated.
We know a few things, she holds back until/unless she is sure about something. She is a bit of a perfectionist and doesn't like to do anything wrong. She shies away from verbally sounding out words she doesn't know for example. She does get a bit lazy with work and doesn't put her best into it.
We want to challenge her and have her try her best at things. But we also do not want to criticize the work that she does do.
We are thinking about just continuing to encourage her to read, and possibly helping her choose more challenging books (she'll choose about grade 1 level books from library). We have also thought of putting her into music classes. This is something that she has requested. And we think it may be a good challenge for her, as she does not really know anything about music.
What do you think? What were ways that you were able to support your child at such a young age?
