Hello-
My son, born at 36 wks, IUGR, he has this tounge issue---lol I dont know what else to call it, when he gets ready for his bottle he locks it to the roof of his mouth---he is 3 wks old now and STILL does it--has ne one had a baby that did this, and if so did it resolve itself or what? Its frustrating bc he wants his bottle and u have to to really work getting the nipple on TOP of his tounge.....just wondering if ne one else had this....

The NICU nurses taught me to put my forefinger on my girls' chins and pull them down, the tongue should pop off the roof if their mouths.

did they check for tongue tie at the hospital? you might find getting a latch at the breast also difficult with a severe tongue tie, and it can be released easily at his age. see a lactation consultant if your docs aren't helpful. would be good to rule it out.

My preemie is now 14mo and in feeding therapy. Our therapist told us that the tongue locked up on the roof of the mouth is a sure sign for reflux, that it is a defense mechanism to prevent the reflux. I didn't know that when my babe was tiny, and now we are having feeding issues, which the slp is theorizing is due to severe untreated reflux.
