My friend has a seven week old baby in the NICU who just got a trach.  He has a weak diaphragm and has been vented since birth, although they hope he will wean off the vent soon.  She's been pumping and will be able to try to nurse him this week.  This is her second baby, and she exclusively nursed her first.

Has anyone had any experience with nursing a baby with a trach?  She's working with an LC at the hospital who seems pretty knowledgeable, but any help for the process would be great.  Thanks!

Gee, that's a tough one. I don't have any experience with this but I thought I'd bump your post for attention. smile.gif

My 6 week old has a trach. If she didn't require a g-tube feeding tube in her stomach because of her aspirating she could totally breastfeed. Is ur babe on a ventilator at all? I suppose full time on a vent would be restrictive but not impossible. My DD has a Passey Muir swallow/speaking valve and an uncuffed trach.

Sorry, just re read ur post...if he is able to take a bottle he should be physically able to breastfeed. It might just take sometime working with him. Best of luck to your friend!
