Valerie Isobel was born at 5:28am on Monday, April 16. She was 9lbs, 5oz and 21 inches long. I gave birth to her in the hospital but it was a very nice experience, not what I expected at all, with my midwife and husband in attendance. I'll come back and post more later, we just came home yesterday and I'm exhausted! Everything is going well, my milk came in last night and Valerie and my other children and dh are doing a great job of keeping me company
So, here's the short version of the birth story...
Sunday afternoon at about 4pm my water broke spontaneously. I was just lying on the couch with a newspaper, I *heard* a 'popping' sound and then there was amniotic fluid all over the place. I quick waddled into the bathroom, yelling to my husband for a towel. I sat on the towel so I could see if the fluid was reasonably clear, which it was. I called my midwife and she told me to head to the hospital (I tested pos. for group B strep) and she'd see me there. We dropped off the kids at our friend's house and got to the hospital at about 5:30pm. I was having contractions then. They were not too strong and were about 5 minutes apart, I was 100% effaced and at about 3cm dilation. We did all the triage stuff and they escorted me and my husband to a birthing suite, a room with a bed and a whirlpool and a birthing ball, etc. It was a pretty nice room. It took me a long time to get to the pushing phase, it was close to 4am before I felt the urge to push and at that point my midwife checked me and said I was fully dilated.
It took me close to 2 hours to push Valerie out. She was stuck under my pubic bone and at a funny angle...head down, but not really forward or rear facing. Eventually though she DID come out and the midwife handed her to me and I held her on my chest, nearly delirious with joy as I waited to deliver the placenta. That didn't take too long, but then everything started going wrong. I started bleeding, a LOT. I bled so much that I passed out. My blood pressure dropped to 58/30 and suddenly there were a LOT of people in the room. The IV thing that had been placed in my hand earlier in the evening for the antibiotics wasn't working and so the staff there were trying to get another IV into me, they tried SIX TIMES and could not get one started and in the meantime my dh was sort of freaking out in the corner with the baby asking 'what's plan B if you can't get that IV?' They called an anesthesiologist to come do it finally. My arms look awful now. DH says the midwife was practically yelling at me to stay awake ( I don't remember this) and he said it was very scary for him.
I ended up staying in the hospital until yesterday, when they let me come home. I still feel very weak and tired, and have to take a lot of iron supplements and vitamins, and take it easy. I feel much better today than I did yesterday, and I hope that it's a trend
Anyway, Valerie weighed 9lbs 5oz at birth and has a pretty big head, she was much larger than my other babies and I'm glad I didn't know that in advance! She's a beautiful little girl and already showing her spunky personality, I look forward to getting to know her better.
