Alden had a rough day yesterday - not feeding as well, and not settling down to sleep as often or for as long. By evening he was really scritchy. By my bedtime he just wouldn't settle and could not be comforted. He was grunting and pulling up his legs, and felt warm. Finally, he had a poop, but he was still grunting and breathing fast. I took his temp and it was normal, but 20 minutes later he still felt warm and he had an elevated temp (38.1). He looked terrible and in pain.
We decided he needed to be seen right then and there. Since it was midnight our only option was the ER. We headed for an ER about 30 minutes away, choosing not to go to the local hospital. We had had really positive experiences at the one farther away. The drive was nerve-wracking. He had poor colour, was breathing too fast, and was moaning. It was so scary - and usually I am not freaked out when the kids are sick.
We got to the hospital and it wasn't busy. His heart rate was really fast on the monitor, but his oxygen sats were good. His temp was 38.6. The intake nurse was really worried and said he looked like he was in a lot of pain.
We were taken into a room right away and were told he was being seen next. I held Alden with the monitor hooked up to his little toe.
he had a huge dump, followed by another huge poop.
All lovely breastmilk poop in its curdy glory. Alden looked up at me, grinning madly at Mama. We changed him just as the doc came in. Alden looked healthy as a horse by now. His heartrate was much lower. The doc examined him from head to toe (no retraction, and no guff about no vaxxes) and said we could go home. We were in and out in 30 minutes!
By the time we snuggled in bed he was sleeping peacefully, and his temp normalized.
Poor thing - I am sure he was mighty uncomfortable. But now I feel so very, um, embarrassed that I took my baby to the ER to have a dump!
