How do you all feel about drinking coffee during pregnancy? Are you all abstaining? Anyone indulging in a cup? I'm wondering if maybe coffee isn't so bad... ? I've given it up, but I keep thinking about it!

I think a cup or so of coffee a day isn't harmful... I drank a medium coffee nearly every day when I was pg with dd (and probably also with ds but that was 11 years ago now - my memories are a bit hazy!). Lots of women often find that coffee and tea makes them nauseous early pg... that's where I am now, but I found that losing my caffeine was hard to adjust to - I was REALLY spaced out for a couple of days. I really could have used a coffee .

I gave it up completely ....and it was really hard!! I gave up cold turkey after having a Starbucks a day for years. I don't think a cup a day is so bad but it does replace other, more nutritious, things as well as depleting calcium in the body. I'll probably indulge once in awhile after the first trimester...what can I say, i miss it!

I drank a cup a day during weeks 4-5, then it stopped being appealing and I was drinking less than a cup anyway, so no longer! I might go back to a cup a day after the frist trimester and my stomach settles down or maybe not - we'll see.

Haven't had any--I usually abstain from caffeine during pg (except for chocolate during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters).

I gave up coffee a few years ago - not for pg reasons - and I took up green tea. I'm still having a cup of green tea in the a.m. However, my mom drank a ton of coffee when she was pregnant with me and my two sibs...

I was having a cup a day until I hit about 6 weeks. Then it just started to make me feel sick to think about it. I have been starting the day with a cup of tea ever since then, and I think that putting milk and sugar in my tea gives my blood sugar just the boost it needs to make the morning sickness not so terrible. So I'm sticking with my sweet tea.

I've read that if you keep it under 300 mg a day it's fine. I think a regular cup of coffee has 288 mgs. It makes me sick and I really miss my pumpkin spice latte!!! MMMMMM!

Take Care,
Pam

just couldn't resist the title of this thread. Esp as an avid tea drinker.

Only time I like coffee is WHEN I'm pg. go figure. And it has to be those super sweet, hyper caffeinated drinks. . . ooooooooh, yum!

I think most items in moderation is ok.

Ever since I got pregnant with dd almost 5 years ago, I haven't been able to handle caffeine. It never used to bother me. It's weird.

I think a cup a day is OK and I was drinking it until this morning, when I couldn't even stand the smell. Bummer about the pumpkin spice lattes, I love them too! Hopefully they are still available when m/s is over.

I love coffee! I see absolutely no harm in a modest amount of coffee everyday. I enjoy a cup of coffee every morning with absolutley no guilt

I drink a cup of espresso almost everyday. I don't feel any guilt at all. I do feel guilt over Pepsi b/c of sugar though. 3 days now without any! Woot!

I drank coffee all the time before I got pregnant with JJ. It made me nauseous after that though. After the first trimester I drank sodas with caffiene occasionally but I could REALLY tell a difference in the baby's movement. I had one before an appointment one time too and his heart rate wasabout 30 bpm higher than any other appointment. So I quit after that.

Even if I wasn't nursing I wouldnt have any caffiene this time. But because I'm breastfeeding I REALLY can't have any. MY son is just really sensitive to it.

I'd warn you too, that if you try to switch from regular to decaf, make sure to clean your coffee maker well to remove any caffeine residue. If decaf is brewed in a machine that usually makes caffeinated, it will have caffeine in it! Especially at Starbucks and other coffee shops. I never order decaf coffee when I'm out, at least not expecting to get decaf!

This is my 4th pregnancy and I lose interest in drinking coffee early on! I just don't like the taste anymore and makes me think of drinking dirty dish water! Weird!

I was drinking decaf before the pregnancy.

I'm drinking it at will. Not as much as before because it's turning my stomache a bit. I have asthma so it's either coffee or my inhaler, I figure a cup of organic coffee is better. I'm also following the blood type diet which allows me coffee. I don't think I'll drink as much espresso as I did with DS because it got him pretty active at times and he had a knot in his cord.

I've given up bad & mediocre coffee. Since that's most coffee, my opportunities to indulge are limited!

Something on NPR the other day said that the espresso drinks usually have less caffeine than a regular cup of coffee, and the caffeine in the espresso drinks is more consistent from drink to drink. Yay, a great excuse to stick with foo-foo capuccinos and lattes. (including that pumpkin pie one)

i pretty much cut out coffee for the first trimester (except for one cup once). i'll probably start having coffee on saturdays in a couple weeks. i, personally, don't think there is anything wrong with a cup a day. my husband is more comfortable if i cut it out during the first trimester

i love coffee and i miss it!

I make organic lattes (org. milk, coffee and unbleached sugar) for dh and myself each morning. With my first pregnancy I had my latte each morning with no problems. This time, it makes my stomach turn just to think about. However, I want to keep drinking it 'cause once it's down, I feel better AND, tmi, without it I may not poop for 9 months. So, there ya go. My real reason. I'd rather poop and risk the caffeine than not poop or take laxatives the whole pregnancy. Oh well...

I realize that coffee is known for the caffeine, and we know chocolate has some in it, and dark sodas (plus mountain dew) but is there anything else that has caffeine in it that we don't think of?

I love my coffee! I've recently switched to a great-tasting de-caf brand, so I can have my java without the guilt!

I don't want coffee right now BUT I'll be back to my cup a day in a few weeks. I drank coffee during my last pregnancy (except for the first tri) and I will this time too.

Come buy your Mountain Dew in Canada, it is illegal to put caffeine in non-cola sodas in Canada. Personally I'd be more concerned about the sugar content and don't think that the artificial sweetners are much good for you eaither. I like my water, thank goodness.

Oh, btw, Dr. Pepper has as much caffeine in it as Jolt (3 times the amount of Coke or Pepsi).

I have a cup of coffee about 2-3 times a week. I seem to have lost my need for 2 cups a day and now just drink it socially with my dh every so often.
