It depends. It can mean that your dates are wrong and so when you think you are 38 weeks you are already at 40.

But if you know when you O'd then it is more likely that the baby is just large. Therefore it may come early, may come late, may come on due date.

I think the last time I saw a number, it was 80% of babies are born after their due date.

But, big baby does often=MD wanting to induce at or ASAP after your due date. Big baby also can=MD saying it's too big to induce, better talk c/s. Just remember, lots of mamas here at MDC have birthed very big babies naturally and without problems!

In my experience, big baby = past due date.

DD was 5 or 7 days past and was 9lb.4oz
DS was 10+ days past and was 10lb.7oz
and my last was induced (bad, baaad, baaaad idea, long story) 1 week early for fear of being "too big". He was 8lb.14oz., so a big guy compared to "normal" but I wouldn't induce early for suspicion of a big baby again. period.

Hi there tofutti,
I do not think that large size is an indicator for early birth. And don't let anyone scare you about it. I naturally birthed my 10 lb. DS with no complications whatsoever, and he was 1 wk past due. It was a really great experience for me.

I only wish...

But no. Both my boys were on the big side (just shy of 9 pounds for the first, and just shy of 10 pounds for the second). My first was a week and a half late, my second was one week late, induced. But like already said above, don't let the size scare you. It's not what makes or breaks a positive birth experience.

When was the U/S?
In the second trimester the dating results are +/- two weeks because genetics plays a big roll in the rate of growth of the baby. You're baby is just the size of an average baby two weeks further along. It doesn't mean your baby will be that same degree of bigger than average later it could be that just his rate of growth happened a little faster.

I agree with Laura... just because the babe was measuring larger than a statistical average at a particular time does not necessarily indicate that she will be born big. My fundal height measured 22 inches around 20 weeks (also "2 weeks" more than average) but now my fundal height is evening out. We all develop according to our own rhythms, not according to averages in medical studies. In a few weeks, your babe might be statistically average.... And you are the wisest woman on this issue, go with your gut!
Good Luck and Happy Growing

WOW thank you guys -- !! so wise, like i said

i forgot to say i know the EXACT date of conception (iui) and my O day too...so they can't mess with me on dates.

i also have faith in my very non interventionist OB NOT to induce me or even say the WORD "c section" in my presence, BUT i will ask ALL about it at my next appt, oooh boy.

i was also perversely proud that he was measuring big not really worried ....

My two boys were 8lbs0z and 9lbs10oz both born a week after their due date (not induced). They both measured a week ahead on their 18 wk u/s. I think it may have more to do with the mother than the baby--I'm expecting I'll go a week late this time, too, even though this baby was measuring fine but a few days behind schedule (although my dates could be a little bit off this time but the dr. wanted to stick with May 5th for my due date).

We were told DS was on the BIG size based on u/s. BUT when he was born, 15 days post due date, he was 7lbs. 7oz. So u/s was not accurate in my case.

my kids always measure a little ahead of my dates...but its because we have big heads When they do the averages they figure in that big ol' head measurements and it makes me look like I'm farther along than I am.

To answer your question...no, it doesn't really mean anything

I am pretty sure like others have said that big doesn't equal early. Though in the case of my ds he measured ahead at the 2 u/s's I had, and was born 6lbs 1oz and 37w 1d. So measuring big doesn't always mean big baby either.

i agree plus I wanted to add that my babies keep getting bigger and I always go late. I dont induce and I wont let any one talk me into a c-section for a big baby.
