Birth Story
Genevieve Margaret
May 4, 7:10 PM
6lbs 12 oz, 20 inches long

Thursday morning I had a midwife appointment. We all agreed that based on how well I was feeling it would likely be a while. We set the next appointment for May 15.
That night I went to bed at 1:00 AM. At three I woke with contractions. It was weird- I had been dreaming that I was selling cloth menstrual pads in an office somewhere and kept having periodic pains. In my dream, I didn't know what they were, but awake I did. I went to the bathroom- bloody show. I knew that this was the day.
I called the midwife right away because I had been persistantly GBS+ despite garlic and hibicleanse. Her assistant, Janis, arrived around 4 and my friend Melanie arrived shortly after.
The heplock took forever to place. I think it was around 1.5 hours? My veins were very uncooperative.
After a bag of penicillin the three of us walked to Arby's where I ate a disgusting amount of fried food. After that we went on the swings and the walked. Laura, the midwife, arrived at 10:30 AM. Another bag of penicillin was run at 11:00.
At this point, contractions were unpleasant and I was exhausted. I had 2 hours of sleep. I had everyone leave and laid down for a nap.
At around 2 I woke up in horrible pain. I knew that early labor was over. Janis and Laura came back at 3 and ran more antibiotics. I got into the tub, which helped the pain but I was too tired to hold myself up for long. By 4:30 I was in bed.
Janis and Laura were excellent about respecting my space- the only thing that they did that a friend couldn't was run the antibiotics. During contractions Laura would pull me into a sitting position (because I was too tired to hold myself up. I really wish I'd had more sleep going into this) and Janis would run my back.
6:45 my water broke. I started crying because I knew that it would hurt more. There was meconium in the water.
A little after 7 I didn't want to be touched and Janis and Laura backed all the way off. I flipped myself off the bed, squatted and grabbed the sheets. I screamed really, really loudly once and the bit the bed. I pushed Genevieve out in less then a minute. As soon as she was out she passed a bunch more meconium and then peed on me. She was nursing at about a minute old.
Janis went and got Josh and Maddie, and after they saw the baby they helped me into bed and cleaned off all the blood and meconium. I was a mess. Josh and Maddie came back in and Laura and Janis cleaned up and left.
Genevieve is a strong nurser. I've already gotten my milk.

To my husband I am wife, to my kids I am mother, but for myself I am just me.
