Graduation/18th B-day Party: Need ideas! - Mothering Forums

So this isn't happening for a year, but I want to get an early start on planning.

DS will turn 18 a month after he graduates high school, and I want to do something really special for him. He hasn't decided yet whether he's going to go away to a college with an ROTC program or just enlist right away, but either way it's looking like he'll be leaving soon afterwards, so it will be combination good-bye party too.

I would like to throw him a party, but the last party I threw had a Spiderman theme I'm great at little kid parties but lost when it comes to bigger people. I've never been to a graduation party. There will be a mix of his teenage friends there and family members of all ages. Unless some miracle happens (ie winning the lottery!) between now and then my budget will be pretty tight. I could have the party here at our house if I had to, but it's right on a busy road and parking would be a problem. I have no idea where I could hold it, or what everybody would do at the party.

What do he and his friends like to do?

Do they like sports? Games? Movies?

Is there a park with a shelter house where you could have a cookout/potluck?

You could have activities for fun, a theme of some sort related to what they enjoy.

Have you talked to your son about it?
