So this isn't happening for a year, but I want to get an early start on planning.

DS will turn 18 a month after he graduates high school, and I want to do something really special for him. He hasn't decided yet whether he's going to go away to a college with an ROTC program or just enlist right away, but either way it's looking like he'll be leaving soon afterwards, so it will be combination good-bye party too.

I would like to throw him a party, but the last party I threw had a Spiderman theme I'm great at little kid parties but lost when it comes to bigger people. I've never been to a graduation party. There will be a mix of his teenage friends there and family members of all ages. Unless some miracle happens (ie winning the lottery!) between now and then my budget will be pretty tight. I could have the party here at our house if I had to, but it's right on a busy road and parking would be a problem. I have no idea where I could hold it, or what everybody would do at the party.

TIA for any suggestions!

What do he and his friends like to do?

Do they like sports? Games? Movies?

Is there a park with a shelter house where you could have a cookout/potluck?

You could have activities for fun, a theme of some sort related to what they enjoy.

Have you talked to your son about it?
