Would a science kit be good? Or something like an astrology book? A sport Jersey from his favorite team? Magazine guides on his favorite video games or a sports magazine subscription?

Have you asked him what he wants? Gift Cards are always good?

A day trip to someplace neat like a cave or western town, a lake or stream, or maybe a family camping trip in his honor if you haven't done camping a whole lot.

Tickets to a sports event? Even if it is months away, the anticipation could be half the fun.

A non-video game?  One of my favorites that's great for a 10-year-old interested in time travel is Chrononauts.  The pyramids from the same company are awesome for playing a huge variety of games--but only buy them if he's a kid who can be trusted to put away his pyramids after playing; they are horrible to step on barefoot!!!
