I don't generally visit the Pre/Teen boards because my dd is only 14 mo. However, I just heard of something that I wanted to share and get comments on. Congress is trying to pass legislation to make it easy to prosecute owners of venues who put on raves, knowing that there will be drugs there, namely Ecstacy.
Here's the article:

The rave culture is old enough that I've been to a couple myself when I was a teenager. Did I do drugs there? No. Did everyone else seem to be on drugs? Yes. But I still love the music. And, if I felt comfortable leaving my baby with a sitter at this point, I would go to a club or rave now. No, I wouldn't do drugs, because I do have a baby to care for.
About drugs in general: I don't think they should be illegal. I think that experimenting with drugs can be a mind-opening experience, and I admit to having done them myself. Just not at clubs/raves. I do realize that drugs are dangerous enough to cause serious problems, even death, the first time you take them, or even the tenth. However, I believe that the most danger comes from abusing them, ie, taking way too many doses at once or taking them throughout the week or even weekend after weekend. Drugs are designed to give the desired affect with one dose. And these kids who are overdosing on Ecstacy are taking eight tabs and more (so I remeber from reports I've heard). But I think they should be legal because I know they can be used responsibly. I have friends who are into the electronic music scene, and they very occassionally go to clubs and take some sort of mind-altering drug, sometimes illegal, sometimes legal (and I don't mean alcohol). These people also have great jobs and spend many weekends working on their house, like normal, responsible adults.
I think we really get into trouble when we try to control our kids too much. It makes them rebel so much more. But it sure is hard to keep a level head when you're talking about your own kid. I have no idea if I will forbid my dd to do drugs, or if I will simply try to educate her as much as possible (or both). And what would I do if I knew she was planning on going to a rave? I don't know. What would you moms do if you found out your kid was going to one?
Sorry so long....
