Money's tight this year, so my gift list of who I'm buying for is pretty short. Near the top of that list, though, are my nieces and foster sisters. One of them, FS14, I met last summer when she was first placed with my mom and I was out there on vacation. Having actually gotten to know her a little, it wasn't hard to find something I reasonably thing she'll like at the bookstore--I'm getting her Egyptology (the kitchy semi-fictitious but still fact-containing book put out by the same people that did Dragonology and Wizardology, with the fancy cover). She's into Egyptian archaeology, but most of the stuff I found was either targeted at a younger audience (DK eyewitness books, etc.) or written at an adult level, and from what I know of her academic background would be a bit inaccessible for her.
My niece, 11, is getting a book as well, in this case one on Italian-Americans' immigration experiences--she's big into family history right now and on her dad's side they're Sicilian.
My other foster sister is 13, she's hispanic, she's into "girly" stuff (makeup, earrings, NOT history books or archaeology, lol.) She just got placed with my mom in November and I haven't met her. You now know just as much about her as I do. So, I got her a blank journal, with a pink cover with black velvety flowers on it. I figured every teenager needs to express herself and should be encouraged to do so.
So, is it a good gift? All of them? Any of them? I remember getting lam-o gifts as a teen, and esp. for kids in modest circumstances they should get something they really like. But on the other hand, I was a total nerd as a teenager, so couldn't just think back to the sorts of things I liked and expect my non-nerdy foster sisters to appreciate them.
