I had my baby!!

William Alexander arrived last night. He was 11 pounds, 2 ounces, and he was 23.25 inches long!! Incredible to me, considering I only gained 16-17 pounds total and my last baby was 8 pounds, 4 ounces and 20 inches. This little man took the cake!! He was born one day past my due date.

At 7:25 pm, we were eating dinner when my water broke. At 7:45 pm, I had my first contraction. The next few were 5 minutes apart. By 8:15 pm, though, they were consistently 2 minutes apart. At about 9:30 pm, I started getting the undeniable urge to push and couldn't help myself. My doula arrived at 9:50 pm, followed by the midwife a little closer to 10:30 pm. Will's head was birthed at 10:42 pm, followed by his body at 10:45 pm.

I was able to have him at home, underwater, without any complications. It was amazing! I was shaking like crazy and it certainly hurt! I begged for drugs, an episiotomy, and finally to "just pull him out." All were denied, obviously. He started moving through the birth canal before anyone else but my mom had arrived, and I swore I was still feeling cervix, not realizing it was head. I kept freaking out, saying, "I'm messing it up, I'm messing it up," but then my doula came in and felt the bulge and clarified that yes it was head, and no I wasn't messing up. I was able to deliver him cradled in my husband's arms, supporting my perineum all by myself.

He let out a little cry and then sat peacefully on my chest until the cord stopped pulsing and I delivered the placenta (with a greater than 2 foot cord!!). He nursed beautifully through the night and is now sleeping the day away. A part of me is concerned because he hasn't nursed since 7:30 am or so, but I keep offering, and he keeps sleeping. He's had 2 really good meconium diapers so far, so who am I to mess with nature?? I guess he knows his body best!!

I'm just so happy to be done! After all of my prodromal labor, I was nearing the end of my emotional tolerance. Best wishes to all other mommies on here who are waiting to meet their bundles of joy!!

My daughter didn't perk up to nurse for almost 12 hours after the initial hour she spent at the breast. But once she hit the 24 hour mark she wanted to nurse about every 60-90 minutes. All the good colostrum right after birth makes 'em sleepy! Trust nature and be glad you didn't have nurses coming in every 3 hours trying to get you to nurse!

Congrats!

: I had a horrible experience in the hosp with my first. In the booklet they give out to everyone who registers there, they said it was normal for babies to nurse very little until the milk came in. And yet I had nurses breathing down my neck and a LC called in when ds was falling asleep after a few minutes at the breast. : He nursed just fine once my milk came in -- after I left the hospital.

This does seem to be what's happened. He slept like crazy yesterday and nursed constantly through the night, and all through today (I don't think I'm really even getting 60-90 minutes - it's more like nonstop!). I actually think he may have dried up my colostrum, because lately he frantically tries to nurse and then cries like he's not getting anything. I just pray my milk comes in asap!!

And you're so right about not being in a hospital! This is so much more relaxed and a healthier nursing start!

I guess I'm in denial! I did get a second degree tear, thankfully not through a bunch of muscle, though. My mw mentioned, "I've seen worse..." I guess that's supposed to be relieving! I've finally - TMI - stopped feeling like my entire rectum is falling off of my bottom. Wow! That really hurt! I would have sworn I pushed him out my butt!!

serious congrats! My girl was 9 lbs 12 oz and pushing was much harder than her sister who was two pounds and two inches smaller. I think birthing in the tub made all the difference though!

Welcome Will!

You sooo are not kidding!! Before I hit transition, I just kept telling my husband, "Why do so many women NOT give birth in water?!?!? THIS ROCKS!!"

Congratulations! What an awesome story! Welcome to Will!

I meant to post much earlier but have been too interrupted by my own little one. I'm just totally in awe of mamas who birth 11lb'ers! I talked to a mama at the zoo the other day who was so happy she'd been induced because baby, "might have been 11lbs!" I told her, "I have a friend who's homebirthed 11lb'ers, so it's possible!" That friend had FOUR that were right at 11lbs and had huge heads, to boot. (We decided that makes a big difference! ) One of hers had a FIVE foot cord!

Anyhow, I'm just totally stoked to hear of your great birth with your big guy - proving once again how perfectly our bodies are designed for natural, normal birth! Way to go, mama!!

Thanks bunches!! It certainly is empowering to do something like that. The chicken in me, however, wonders if my resolve may have waivered had I known he would be sooo big! I am still so in awe of the body's natural abilities, too. My first birth was a typical hospital, with all of the bells and whistles. Without the epidural or the IV, I felt sooo much better! And moments after the birth, I realized how "stoned" I felt - no doubt the result of the body's natural pain relievers. It took a few days for the pain to kick in. Now I look back at my first birth and think, "What a sissy!" Oh well; I guess we never know our own strength until we're forced to tap into it.
