I'm terribly curious. I know everyone is different, but I just wanted to know, how long does your typical nursing session last (at this point) with your new baby?

Senara will start nursing, and do a combo of gulping, pausing, zoning out and comfort sucking until she suddenly stops, gets a concentrated look on her face, and fills her diaper. At which point, I wait a bit, (make sure she's done - she sprayed daddy with poop last week - his first kid of all five to get him : ), then change her diaper. I set her down, go wash my hands while she screams because she wants back on, and then resume the gulping, pausing, zoning out and comfort sucking cycles until she decides she's done. This can take up to an hour, sometimes about 45 mins or so. Very rarely does she nurse for less time unless it's an "I need to suck to get to sleep" situation, which she does occasionally.

What's your typical session like? I'm pretty much unable to do anything else while she nurses on account of needing to hold my breast up off from her and in a position that she can get to. Consequently very little gets done every few hours while I sit and nurse her... I've never been able to nak, sadly.

Anyone got a champion speed nurser? Anyone else got a mid-session impatient pooper? How 'bout your other silly early newborn nursing stories?

My daughter was like that. It got better as she got older, but nursing always took a long time. My son on the other hand, he nurses for 10-15 minutes about a million times a day. He gulps down fast, lets go, spits up on me, cries for more, switches sides, repeats, happy for 5-15 minutes, then does it all again. I would do anything for a 30 minute nursing session followed by an hour of peace!

I think things will get much better in the next 6 weeks. I know it will!

My little one ( 8 weeks now ) is a quick nurser in the night lately, she will take a few sips and fall back asleep. Makes me worry a bit about my supply : I wish that she would nurse longer in the night

I'm w/ LawrenceDoula, I have a 10-15 minute nurser who wants to be on the breast all the time. She doesn't seem to burp all the time though, about 1/2 the time she does which I find strange. Her big thing is sucking, she always wants to be sucking on my finger. We are trying very hard to avoid the pacifier but last night it was an hour and 45 minutes of finger sucking before she'd sleep and then got up 45 minutes later to nurse...ahhh! But she's only 4 weeks and has no clear pattern yet (aside from not liking to settle down at bedtime .

The best story I have so far is when I was giving her a bath about a week ago. I waited for DH to be home because otherwise it's a hassle since she prefers to be in the water with me rather than in the infant tub. SO, I get in and get settled and DH runs to the store to pick up something and was going to get her out when he got back. While he was at the store, my little on was nursing as I tried to soap her up. Wouldn't ya' know, as soon as she was done she pooped! Nothing says love like bathing in your newborn's poo .

About 15 minutes every hour, hour and a half or so? Except for naptime (that is, the sleep that he misses mealtimes for- 9am, 12.30 and 4pm, give or take.) The middle-of-the-night feed takes a LONG time though.

I still can't breastfeed but Trixie does the mid feeding poos. She is chugging along then stops goes all red, grunts and I feel the vibrations in my lap. Such a lovely little gem this one is!

Trace makes so much noise when I nurse him that people in the room stop and stare With the third baby, I nip quite a bit...at the park, at Bible study, at play dates, etc. He's a piggy and gulps and snorks and smacks and gulps and burps....I'm used to how loud he is, but others aren't Fortunately, he's pretty quick, but he does nurse every two hours (or more) during the day. More spread out at night, thank goodness.

Now, my first dd nursed for 45 mins to an hour for months and months and months...thank goodness she was my first! If I'd had another one then I would have gone crazy!

Teeny, I'm glad you asked - I was wondering about the same thing last night!

Peter generally nurses about 10-25 minutes per side. We nurse on the first side, burp and change the diaper, then nurse on the second side. The whole production takes about an hour. He nurses every 2-3 hours or less.

A happy woman

during the day a nursing session is 30-45 minutes with a little snoozing. at night it's usually a very aggressive 15-20 minutes. she doesn't even open her eyes at night, just latches on and super-chugs!

I have a speed nurser too. 10 minutes per side and he doesn't always take both. He does the mid boob poo too. Gets all red in the face and grunts. It's kinda funny. We do a diaper change and he will sometimes want more. At night he's up every 3 hours to eat. I haven't paid attention to how often during the day he eats.

Robin averages 20 minutes. We only nurse on one side at a time. Sometimes she lingers for longer. She doesn't poop at every feeding, but saves her poop up and poops several times in a row (sort of like cluster pooping). Pretty amusing. Typically she naps for 1.5-2 hours during the day between feedings, and at night a little longer.

yes yes yes. and she's very close to 3months old. It's extremely frustrating, especially with older kids to deal with.

I want to say every two hours and about 20 minutes on each side... and he does the mid-nursing grunting poop, and then he just keeps going. We are almost 5 weeks and going through a growth spurt... but tell me again, when does it let up???? Don't get me wrong, I love the cuddling and nursing and bonding thing, but my house needs to be cleaned and my other kids have to eat too!

Teeny, your description is my baby in a nutshell! Such little gourmets, I guess...

I have no idea how long night feedings take, as we start when I'm half-awake and then an hour+ later I'll wake up and realize he's been snacking on and off the whole time, hee hee.

robin is like this -- a loud and proud eater. she grunts like crazy.

I think actual EATING time is about 15 minutes for Mia - I have forceful letdown, so she gulps madly initially, I burp her, then she feeds a little more & then sleeps. We usually just do one boob. Sometimes she sleeps after the first gulp-session for about 15 minutes.

Initially nursing took 45 mins each session; now it's shorter. Anywhere from 1 hour to 4 hours between sessions, depending on her mood & growth spurts!

And she poops usually just after nursing. Trying to EC her so we're trying to find that pattern.

We're like many of you as well. With my twins, being my first, I was clueless, and they'd nurse for hours at a time. Little did I know what I was doing. With DS #3, he was, and still is, a determined, focused eater - kind of like a pig in a trough. With my new DS, #4, he's now more of a grazer. He likes to eat, slows down just when my let-down happens, and eats again in 10 or 15 minutes. The most he's stayed latched on is about 10 minutes. If I feed him on the other side during the same session, it all comes back up. Love that stinky cheese! He's definitely a cluster-nurser.
