On Tuesday March 25th, Matilda Anaïs entered the world at 3.54pm (at 40w6d).

8lb 1/2 oz and 19.5"

After weeks of being head down (I've felt her head down since about 28 weeks), and even the midwife's one internal exam at the home visit at about 37 weeks confirmed this, besides all the external palpations each week, little miss decided that she had to surprise us all by coming out Frank breech.

It wasn't until she was crowning (butting?) and the midwife broke my water that we realised what was going on, and I heard the immortal words "she's breech!" coming from behind me. I was in the birth pool at the time, and my midwife had me get into a squat rather than the position I was in, which had been leaning on the side of the tub and on my knees, just to open my pelvis to the most optimal position. After 10-15 minutes of pushing, there she was!

Overall I'm just happy that we didn't know she was breech, that may have thrown a spanner into my home water birth plans. And I'm happy things went so smoothly. I had a small internal tear, that could have required 1-2 stitches, but wasn't necessary and so I declined (wasn't in the mood for more futzing around down there after all that ).

Matilda is doing well otherwise. After losing 4.5 ounces by her next day's check up, she was already 3.5 ounces over her birth weight yesterday, at 5 days old! Yay for colostrum and mama milk!

Congratulations! I'm sure the breech was quite a surprise for everyone, but sounds like it was handled very smoothly!
