Anybody read this? Want to read this? I'm about 100 pages in, but I keep picking it up, reading 50-100 pages, and putting it down. It does seem like a good novel, and it's the first Tolstoy I've ever read, so I really want to finish it. Anyone with me?

Not me!  I never did make it through it.  I got about 2/3 and gave up.  However, I really wanted to know what happened to the plot line of the farmer guy (it's been a while).  So it became the first and last time I grabbed a copy of cliff's notes for a book.  It wasn't required reading, I just thought I would like it.

Are you still reading it? I'll join you, I already have the book but I've never read it. I just need 2 days or so to finish up the book I'm already reading.

I keep looking at this thread and thinking 'I don't have time', but oh, what the heck - I'll join you, too, if you're still in. :) I have way too much on my to read list, but I haven't read AK since college, and have been meaning to pick it back up again.

Sould we have a start day and so many pages per day/week? It would be nice to discuss it because it's somewhat hard to follow.

I should try and read it, too. I'll have to check and see if the library has it. I think I checked it out once before, but just looked at it, saw how long it was, and never even tried. I should really try.

I like the idea of discussing along the way. I am reading on a Kindle, though, so will not have page numbers. Could we go by chapters instead?

Chapters would be fine. I'll start from the beginning smile.gif Quick tip: photocopy the character list and use it as a bookmark. It will prove to be very helpful smile.gif

I'm on chapter 13 right now - not sure how that translates into pages. How far do you all think we should read for the first week?

Oh girls, you're going to regret letting me enter your group, but now that I'm reading I'm super anxious to discuss. Is anyone ready to start yet?

So, I downloaded it to my iPhone (kindle for iPhone) and the translation is completely different than the Penguin version I have been reading. While I've had some difficulty with the Penguin book, I'd feel kind of like a cheat if I read the kindle version...I am in Part 2 of the Penguin book, but I'm going to re-read the easier version to pick up on things I missed and to catch up to where you're all at. So far, it looks like it's these people are reading:

-Motivated Mama
-Owen'nZoe
-SubliminalDarkness
-Arduinna

Raise your hand if you're still in and let's get going! smile.gif

So, the Penguin is the Pevear/Volokonsky translation? TBH, I'm not sure which translation I've been reading...I think I'll switch over to that version just to be sure.

Could very well be! The copyright is even only in roman numerals and there's very little info in the book besides the text itself. I also haven't quite paid enough attention to even decipher what the copyright year is. I'm a little rusty on roman numerals.

Thoughts svo far? I've read as far as the first ball, so three storylines are going: Stiva and Darya, Levin / Kitty / Vronsky, and Anna and Vronsky. I'm finding I have a lot less sympathy for Stiva as I read this time around than when I last read in college. I think it must be because with my post childbirth body, I identify with Darya more. ;)

There is also this terrific little detail from the ball that I want to share, if you all have read that far. Let me know!

So, I've read to the ball, but I'm all confused, think I may have missed some pages, messed up my bookmark or something when I was really tired. I'm in the part where Levin is dealing with his farming duties and more has happened between Anna and Vronsky. What, about the ball, are you referring to?

Unfortunately, I've reread the part I wanted to discuss in the Penguin edition, and the part that I loved so much must have been a translation error, because it isn't in this edition. What a bummer. :(

In general, though, I love how he builds complexity in the characters by playing them off one another - When Anna's talking to Dolly, and trying to get her to forgive Stiva, Anna tells Dolly how Stiva feels -- but it isn't at all how Stiva feels, it is how Anna herself will feel later in the book after she has deceived her husband. And Levin thinks of himself as someone who works with his hands, isn't an aristocrat, isn't an intellectual. Yet, it's clear when he is with the Oblonskys and the Scherbatskys and all of their circle that he isn't that much of an outsider. And when we see him with people who think of themselves as intellectuals (like his brother Sergei's professor friend), we get to see that he is actually quite intellectual.

What is everyone else thinking of the book?

lol.gif Sorry. I've been so busy with studying for the MCAT, work, kids, exercise, etc. I just really haven't picked it up in awhile. It just doesn't have that "can't put it down" appeal although I have enjoyed the story. I keep reading it when I'm tired though and I miss a lot, then I find myself re-reading it 100 times. I can't just FOCUS.

Good luck with the MCAT studying. Wow! That is impressive!

thumb.gif No apologies necessary! :) I totally get it. Actually, it is quite funny - my degree is in Russian Lit, and when DH saw me reading AK again (for the first time in at least 10 years, mind you), what was his response? "Why in the world are you doing that to yourself again?!?" lol.gif Anyway, I agree - it is a great book, but not really a page turner.
