I'm about 25 pages or so away from the end. Let's talk with the spoilers.

I found it slow going at first. The grandparents' secret and the truth about Cal kept me going. I was eager to find out when both facts would be revealed to others.

Can you believe the part about the peep show! That took me by complete surprise.

Also, I guess the brother was called Chapter 11 because he ran the hot dog business into the ground, huh.

It took me 40-50 pages to get into it. Then I was completely hooked by the genetic/family history behind Cal.

Okay, I'm sorry to be so slow reading this book, usually I can finish a book this size easily in a week.

Anyway, I'm on page 340 and it is getting good again. I was starting to get bored with it but since I've spent so much time in the dentist chair this past week, that is where I've been reading.

I am so sad for Callie. She has such conflicting emotions, I can't imagine what that must be like in the teen years when you are struggling with identity issues and then on top of that to have male and female feelings.

Okay, I am almost finished. So what are we going to read next so that we can all start to get our books together.

Someone else can pick the next one, since I chose Middlesex.

Hi! Can I join your book club? I've read Middlesex about a year ago and enjoyed it. I just finished HP : so I'm ready for something new. Do you all read a certain genre or pick from a list or just from what someone heard was good?

Ok, I'm finished.

Warning :: Spoiler Ahead! Highlight to read message!
I didn't like it. The peep show thing weirded me out and I just felt sorry for Cal, and then Milt dying before seeing Cal again. I know that Milt dying before having to know his daughter was now his son, may have been a good thing but I think he would have rather known his child was alive and safe. And, I thought that Desdemona telling Cal was sort of anticlimatic. Anyone else?

Hello, I am moving this to Book Clubs. Y'all may have threads for individual chapters or subjects from the book in here but please try and include which book in thread title as well as whether or not there are spoilers.

I'd still like to talk about whether it was an autobiography or not!! I'm leaning towards possibly-even though he denies it....

I know, it really felt like an autobiography to me. I wouldn't be shocked if he came out later and said it really was his memoir.

I'd like to join in! Has anyone A Map of the World by Jane Hamilton? It was on Oprah's list a few years back. I just read the first 30 pages and didn't want to put it down. It's about the accidental death of a child and the aftermath. Just a suggestion, I'm up for anything!

For those who have read Middlesex, the author will be on Oprah : on Friday Sept 21 discussing the book. I'll have to TIVO it, since my DD has horseriding lessons at that time.

I finished the book two weeks ago and LOVED it. The only part that bothered me was the whole Chapter Eleven thing - I wish it had explained why she referred to her brother that way because it confused me completely.

can I join? Middlesex was the last novel I finished about a month and a half ago. I'll reread it with joy to make sure I remember everything. Yeah! Loved this book. Maybe when everyone finishes we can read his first novel, The Virgin Suicides.

i guess this discussion has pretty much died out, but i thought i'd throw my 2cents in anyway.

my sister gave this book to me at an airport and i finished it within 36 hours or so. i could not put it down! i found it very compelling. when i re-read it later i was surprised how much it seemed like 2 complete books, really. the whole background about his greek ancestry goes on for quite a while and is fascinating. i felt like there was just enough foreshadowing of things to come and weaving together of the past and the present to keep me going through the parts that felt a little slower.

the chapter 11 thing ... yeah, that bothered me too. it just felt so random! no explanation at all. and i'm not sure if i'm remembering this correctly, but i guess no one refers to him by name throughout the entire book, huh? it's not like other characters are calling him "chapter 11," right?

re:autobiography? i guess i'm not surprised that that's the most common question he's asked, but i absolutely believe that it's fiction. yes, he's greek, but come on. and everyone who said "you can tell by looking at his picture" or whatever: what? in general, you really can't tell a person is intersexed by looking at him or her, unless perhaps she's naked.

anyway, i totally loved this book. i'm happy to see that others here enjoyed it as well.

Salty--

I bought this book at the airport, too. LOL A couple of summers ago, actually.

I loved this book. The imagery of the old country. The painful truth-telling of Cal's story...The uncomfortable parts that got under my skin.

I adored the whole book. I've read it three times now.
