I'm on page 188 in "News of the World".

I'm canning tomatoes today, so I won't be able to read any more until tonight.

No rush BookGoddess, we can begin discussing when you are ready. I won't be reading until bedtime.

I started this book a few weeks ago and stopped because I found a non-fiction book at the library about a peace corp personnel spending 2 years in Mali with a midwife. Anyway, I'm finished the non- fiction book and am back to reading Middlesex.

So as we are discussing the beginning few chapters, it will come back to me, what exactly happened.

Wahoo! I was just coming on here to see if anyone is reading this book. I'm actually around page 350 and reading it OBSESSIVELY. I can't put it down. Haven't felt this way about a book in a while, and I've definitely read some good ones.

I won't say anything yet, but I'm looking forward to discussing this with you all.

be well,

It is called Monique and the Mango Rains by Kris Holloway. It was a very interesting quick read.

Okay, I am around page 200. Anyone wanting to discuss a little?

I am enjoying reading it but does anyone else get the feeling that this book is not fiction?

Oh yes. I can really feel Desdemona's guilt and fear about her and Lefty's relationship and about her children's safety. I'm wondering if it will eventually come out that they were brother and sister-I know Lina knows, but will she keep it a secret??

I keep justifying the incest in my head by saying they were traumatized by all the chaos and losing their parents.

Do you get the feeling that this book isn't really fiction?

that...but on lefty's side, I thought he really just never believed he would find someone else....
But what about Tessie and Milton? They were close enough IMO, to be too related to be together...

Ooh, I never thought about that, though I did notice the name Eugenides popped up somewhere....

I am on Book Three page 230 or so.

Warning :: Spoiler Ahead! Highlight to read message!
Yeah, with Tessie and Milton, I thought "why couldn't they find someone else, not related" Part of me is thinking that this book has to be fiction, because wouldn't Milton or Zoe have had birth defects of some sort?

I am having trouble getting a lot of reading done. One of my peach trees exploded last week, so I was trying to get my canning and peach jam made before my next tree explodes (today or tomorrow) and then I have one more that will be ready in a week or so. Not to mention my husband keeps bringing me tomatoes from the garden and cucumbers (for pickling).

Wow! What a shocker. When I started reading the description of Lefty, I was certain he was gay. But as I read more and more I got a sense of "uh-oh, I don't like where this is headed. Please don't tell me they end up together." I am bothered by it but I think I would have been more bothered by the incest had it been between parent/child. Not that I condone incest in any form mind you. I guess this relationship explains the appearance of the recessive trait of the main character. Very interesting premise. The writing is beautiful. I especially loved the first mention of the deletion in the chromosome and its appearance thoughout the family history. That passage appears early in the book. Am enjoying this book very much. Can't wait to see what else happens.

Yes! I also wondered if there is more to this fictional story. Did anyone else flip to the back cover and take a good look at the author? I did. I tried to see if he could possibly be the main character.

definitely looks like he could be the main character. (I wanted to say that earlier but I was afraid of sounding like I was stereotyping : )

No, it was here

Which is probably from the magazine.

Also, why oh why is older brother named Chapter Eleven, did I totally miss something, like an explanation??

Warning :: Spoiler Ahead! Highlight to read message!
I wonder how the family finds out about Desdemona and Lefty being siblings-they have to eventually because Cal knows. Don't spoil me if you know!!!

I haven't found an answer yet as to why the "Chapter Eleven" name. It seems odd. I'm sure there will be an explanation.

And, no, I haven't gotten to the part if/when the family finds out.

Cal likes to use capitalized nouns to refer to certain people. In a later chapter that covers his teenage years, he refers to the girl he likes as Obscure Object/The Object and her parents as Mrs. Object. I think in the same vein, he refers to his brother as Chapter Eleven not because that is his real name (I can't imagine Cal's American born parents giving that name to a child) but rather it represents some characteristic of him like Chapter Eleven bankruptcy or something similar.

I've been having trouble getting into this book. I will give it another go tomorrow and hopefully will be joining everyone in the discussion.

Anyone else find it slowgoing at first?:

Yes, and some things disturbed me and made me want to put it down but once I got comfortable with it, it has been readable.

I just wish I wasn't so bogged down with canning and freezing, I would have more time to read. :
