Crib mattress proper fit? - Mothering Forums

Ok, we co-sleep...but we have a crib, I lay her in it when I have to pee so the dog and other kids leave her alone!! LOL I also lay her in it at nap time (though she hasn't actually slept there for more than a few minutes) just to introduce her to the idea of it so that if at some point I need her to sleep there she can....but right now she thinks it's just for watching the lion on her mobile...

But I noticed the other day that the gap between the mattress and the crib sides seems too big to me. Where can I find out what is right? I can fit my whole hand in between it easily. Why is that? Her whole leg would go in it with no problem.... what should I do? It's all new, purchased this year...
