Well mama, I'd put my debt snowball on hold for a month or 2 to save up the $$ for a safer seat. We have done it in the past and would do it again. When DS2 was born, we needed to figure out how to fit 3 across in our only family vehicle, a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I poured over carseat.org and here, I measured EVERYTHING trying to figure out the best fit and what to do, and then DH and I stopped our debt snowball for 2 months to save up the money for a Radian65 b/c it was the only seat that would fit between the seats we already had.
In your situation, I would do it again, b/c while your debt repayment may be prolonged by a few months, your child's life and safety, AND YOUR life and safety are important. While you're willing to assume the risks of riding in the rear with a lap belt only, you are irreplaceable to your family, just as your child is. I always consider safety a priority over debt repayment (and I'm talking true safety here, not just, "oh the newest greatest carseat just came out and I want a new one to replace the still functioning, still safe seat we currently use" safety)
