Supposedly the minimum size required by law is 51 5/8" x 27 1/4" for length and height, and less than 6" for depth. So how come I've purchased two brand new mattresses in the last two months and they both leave gaps in the crib? Are cribs getting bigger? Are mattresses being sold which do not meet the size requirements? I don't remember it being this difficult when I was buying cribs and mattresses for my own children 10 - 12 years ago.

Also, most mattresses now have a toddler/foam side and a much higher sale price.

And, most mattresses now seem to have antimicrobial chemicals which I would not want due to the possible carcinogenic nature of these chemicals.

I guess this is just a gripe, but if you have any suggestions for a good, firm mattress without antimicrobial agents, and at least 27.5 inches in width, please let me know. Thanks.

This is only 27.25 inches in depth (fits law requirements), but it fits fine in my DaVinci crib. I don't know how it is as far as chemicals, but I don't recall it smelling when we bought it. I took it out of the bag so it had plenty of time to air out before baby came, but like I said I really don't remember it smelling.

If you can, try IKEA. I don't know about sizing but I think they are standard. They are cheaper, too, and less awful.

Thanks for the suggestion. I looked at their mattresses and they look pretty good.
