Hi there,

My 7 year old is transitioning to a booster with a back that includes a seat belt guide for the chest part (do they all?).  After so many years of obsessively tightening, sitting in the durn thing to get the H clip in the right spot etc.  it is feeling really weird to me that the seat doesn't actually attach, it's just the seat belt doing the restraining.  Do I have this right?  Are all booster seats like that (eg. not attached using the tether)?

The function of the booster is to position the seatbelt correctly.  The seatbelt restrains the child.  Not the booster seat.  So yes, that is correct.

Happily married to my dh, mama to ds1 (01/2005), ds2 (07/2007)  and dd (07/2009).

I'm just starting to research boosters and saw this.... Just so you know, there are boosters that have latch system anchors so you can anchor the booster to the seat just like the infant/toddler car seats.

I just looked at a Graco one and my friend recommended Diono brand (used to be Sunshine Kids?) so I'm looking into that, too.

The only purpose of those LATCH on boosters are to keep the booster from being a projectile when there is no one riding in the booster.  They in no way are designed to restrain the booster like they do a car seat.

Yup!  And they attach with LATCH, not tether, so it would still be different.  The LATCH attached boosters do seem convenient, though (so you don't have to buckle the booster in each time).
