I know this has been talked to death, but I can't find it!!!!! :

Mom is buying a new 5 point for my son to use in her car. The Apex is the best choice, but I can't find the top strap height anywhere - is it higher than the Radian?

TOTALLY off the top of my head, the apex height is 17" (though there are rumors of a few 19" ones out there...) and I THINK the radian is higher- around 18 or 19.

The Apex is about the same as a Marathon. Radian is a bit higher -- IIRC it's about the highest there is. But the Apex can be used as a booster after the child outgrows the harness, so the total useful life of the seat is longer -- assuming you're willing to switch to a booster a little earlier. You can get more info at the car-seat.org forum -- it's a fabulous resource.

Incidentally, the "Safety First Biltmore" is in fact exactly the same seat as the Cosco Apex, and you can get it for $90 here!!!

Also I think the new recaro seats should have a strap height similar to the radian.

Right. Duh. I even HAVE one (well, a Husky really) and I guess I just think of it as a totally different category of seat, so....

The new Recaros are rumored to have strap heights of 19 inches. We shall see

Boulevard=16.5
Marathon=17 inches
Apex=17 inches
Radian=18 inches
Recaro Como/Signo=19 inches
Regent=21 inches.

HTH!

Thanks! I need something around $100, easy to install/remove on our own AND that isn't terribly large. I'd do the Radian, but he was so uncomfortable in it when we tested it at the store, plus it's pricier than Mom wants for her car. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my new Regent, but that's not an option for her smaller vehicle.

ThreeBeans - THANKS! That just tells me he's already too tall for the Apex top strap height, which really is a bummer..............

That stinks! I was excited about the Apex, but not so much after I discovered that it had to be installed with seats that have high seat backs or headrests and I wasn't impressed with the quality when I saw it IRL.

Fortunately, dd still has lots of room in her Marathon, but I've got my fingers crossed that she'll get at least a year out of the harness in her backup Graco Cargo.

Kids and carseats makes me Argh!

My Apex has 19" slots. Just remember you have to have headrests for this seat. My Radian has 18" slots.

My Apex has 19" slots, too. I think it'd be worth taking a measuring tape to the store and checking to see if you can find one that's 19".

Every time I'm in a baby equipment store, I check their Apex to see if it's one of the famed 19 inchers

It's weird, it's such a tall seat (as tall as the Husky, I think, with the headrest up all the way). Why would it have 17" harness slots? And if they make 19" ones, why not make them all 19"?

The official Dorel line is that the 19 inch seats DON'T EXIST. Evidently those extra two inches are all just figments of our imaginations

*if* you can find one of the 19" ones, that sounds like your best option. The only other seats with slots higher than 17 inches are gonna be the radian, recaro, and regent, so you really don't have much choice. If you really can't afford/fit in the car one of those 3 seats, and can not find a 19" Apex, then I think your only option is going to be a BPB. At 6 years old, and a torso height of over 17 inches, a booster *should* be adequate for his needs,(This IS the 6 yr old we're talking about, right?) and again, if one of those 3 options is NOT an option for you, it really is your ONLY choice, unfortunately.
