I dragged my husband last night to a midwifery fund raiser which also showed the Business of Being Born. It was really phenomenal and very eye opening. We left and my husband thanked me for taking him. He couldn't believe how things have gotten messed up, how far away we are from the norm. I'm planing an HBAC and he was supportive but now he's absolutely excited about it. And I'm ecstatic...

It is fabulous I saw it a few months ago and wish I had taken my husband. It would have been very good for him to see I think! If you get the chance check it out!

i have only seen the trailer for this and i know there are places showing it around the area, but how did you find where it was showing?

i feel like it's some kind of underground cult film the way it's being hidden so well. lol

i would like for my partner to see this.

I heard about it through the Illinois Families for Midwifery group but you can also see their website for upcoming showings. http://thebusinessofbeingborn.com/screenings.htm

It will be available on Netflix very soon though.

I think it's just because they haven't arranged for wide release yet. And I've heard that it WILL be coming out, but probably not everywhere. The whole supply and demand thing ...

I saw it on Saturday night and really enjoyed it. Kinda preaching to the choir, though . (Although the birth center where it was showing signed up at least 4 new clients as a result of the movie !)

Mama to M (7/05) and S (5/08) my surprise !!!

Oh I am so jealous! I really wanted to go to that screening, but the website said the tickets were no longer available. :

I just saw it in CT last week. I thought they did a great job, ad the panel discussion afterwards (a bonus of going to a screening - not all screenings host them, but many do - as opposed to waiting for thratrical release) was excellent too. Perfect paired with reading Jennifer Block's "Pushed".

I agree wholeheartedly! I even mentioned Pushed at the discussion after the screening, and said it made the perfect complement to the film .

So glad you got to see it there. We are planning to have a screening here in the Lansing area in January. I saw it in Ann Arbor in Sept and knew that the Lansing area needs to see it.

I am also reading "Pushed" right now as well. Phenomenal.

Oh I was there too! Did you stay for the panel afterwards?

Okay everyone is talking about Pushed sounds like it is a worthy read, I wonder if our library has it.

I finished reading Pushed in 4 days, it was that good. I couldn't put it down even though some parts made me tear and cringe. I think she did a very good job with the book. I really loved the history of what other things have been done to women throughout the years and were at one point standard procedure. Very eye opening and truly a must read for many women. But then I also feel that most women shouldn't be using surgeons for prenatal care and delivery.

Yes, I did stay. The information that the OB shared at that event is what made me start to organize to have a screening here. Horrible, horrible.

And, Barbara Hotelling is one of the talkback panelists we will have in Jan. at our screening. Stay tuned for more details... I will be posting a thread when we have more details outlined/confirmed.

It has been taking me a long time to get through "Pushed", but that is because I only read it when I am the pick-up line to get my preschooler or right before I go to bed. So glad someone out of the BIrth realm decided to write a book on this. Soooooo overdue and needed.

Mine did .

I was thinking about the movie today, and remembering the part where the midwife actually gave birth, and what a hard time she was having -- and what a grumpy mama she was. I know a lot of it had to do with the editing, but OMG, I thought that part was soooo hilarious! I was laughing so hard .

Mama to M (7/05) and S (5/08) my surprise !!!

Our audience was cracking up at that too! Howling, shrieking, threatening to take off altogether . . . : I loved that she herself had a good sense of humor about it in retrospect - AND that it gave her empathy for the women she served that were having a difficult time. Seems like such a valuable lesson.
