I wrote this up for myspace this morning, so I figured I'd post it here too! : )

Baby # 2 is here!!! : )

Our sweet little baby entered the world on April 20, 2008 @ 12:49 am. We were surprised to welcome another little girl into our family. Everyone we know thought our little surprise was a boy. Kierah Avery Elizabeth Jokerst weighed only 6 lbs and one half of an oz. She was born nearly two weeks early. We haven't measured her yet, but she's long and skinny right now. She has mad nursing skill and will catch up to her big sister before we know it. We had a completely natural, unassisted birth in the comfort of our own home. I can't fully express the awesome element being in your own surroundings brings to birth. It was an unbelievable experience. Kierah's birth was much more intense than her sister's and only an hour shy - 8 hours!!! Jamison's was induced with pitocin though, so I'm sure it would have been longer had that factor been left out. The birth itself started the exact same way Jamison's did with my membranes (1st bag) rupturing in small gushes. I enjoyed early labor by baking banana bread at 12 am and making hummus around 5 am. Active labor picked up around 4 the next afternoon. Mike offered complete support during labor and caught his little girl as she entered the world. He did such a wonderful job with everything! I am so proud of him. We enjoyed the first stage of active labor by listening to our favorite cd and joking around between contractions. When labor became too intense to laugh in between breaks, he really had to work to keep me as comfortable, which was no easy task. I actually have bruises on my back from all the massaging he had to provide. It had to be difficult dealing with a very vocal, mad woman in labor. Vocalizing the intensity of how I was feeling was one of the only ways to dealing with all the back labor I was experiencing. I even tried the bathtub, though Mike advised against it. He said he wasn't about to tell me no though! Hehe... That was a horrible idea and I soon got out. By that time, my body began bearing down. Instead of instructed pushing, I allowed my body to instinctively push her out. Allowing the body to take over and bear down on it's own is much more intense, yet prevents tears and harm to the perineum. I actually had to work against my body at times to hold her in because I was afraid she'd come out too fast and rip me apart. She was FINALLY born right before 1 am. She wanted out with only one push, but like I said before, I had to hold her back our of fear of tearing. She was out in four to five back to back contractions. I tried to allow just her head to exit first, but her whole body shot out with her head. Guess what? - No Rips, or Tears - not even so much as a skid mark. She was born in her caul or the 2nd membrane. I knew something was up when I felt for her head as it was coming out and couldn't feel a bit of hair. I wondered what kind of alien was exiting my body. We were extremely surprised by that one! Mike just swept the membrane away and suctioned her mouth and nose a little bit. I was peering deliriously from between my legs as I had just pushed her out on my hands and knees. I saw what I though was a scrotum and remarked, "I see a sack! It's a boy." We later watched the birth video to realize Mike had just assumed boy and called her a him until I said something about the sex and then he finally took a peek. He was like, "Um, no... It's another little girl!" That was another shocker! She had fooled everyone! Jamison was a little tired and overwhelmed by the moment. She requested I put the baby back in my belly because she wanted booby! She went downstairs shortly thereafter and passed out in the recliner without the tv on! Our birth was amazing and I guess that's all I have to say right now! : ) We are soaking up every bit of our babymoon as it will not be long before she's running around with her sister acting so grown! Love to all.

Wow! What a neat birth story!

I had no idea that there could be two membranes....none. Thanks for the education

Used to be stay at home parent to our two lovely girls, survived nursing school with family intact, about to graduate and looking for a job! I low-supply nursed my bio daughter for 3 years.
