I've been making banana almond smoothies almost every night during my pregnancy. I didn't realize until today that the vanilla extract that I use (I put in 2 teaspoons for each smoothie) has alcohol in it. It's the brand that I get from Costco...it says it's pure vanilla but it's in a base of water, alcohol (35%), and sugar. Do you think it's enough alcohol to do any sort of damage?

Mama to DS 7/23/08.

Yes it is safe; that is a truly insignificant amount, even if you have it every day. And pretty much all extracts consist of the flavouring in an alcohol base - alcohol is the cheapest and most stable substance for that purpose.

i have to agree--i'm sure it's nothing to worry about. i would imagine you'd have to drink a TON of vanilla extract for it to do anything negative.

Not a problem, especially in the end of the second or beginning of the third trimesters.

Mom of a 7 yr old, 4 yr old, and 1 yr old. Wow. How did that happen?

I'm sure it's totally fine. That's hardly any alcohol!

I really think too much is made of "no alcohol during pregnancy"
I know there are many mws and obs who say a few glasses of wine a week is no problem.
I've even heard a glass a day would be fine.

Think of all the healthy babies born for many many years when women drank alcohol during pregnancy.

Women being told not to drink any alcohol during pg is a relatively new thing.

You're lucky if that's the worst thing you've ingested!

Don't worry! I dump white wine into nearly everything I cook for dinner--

Yum, I've been on a smoothie kick lately! Banana berry, banana strawberry, choco banana.... What recipe are you using?

(Sorry to go totally off the topic of vanilla extract!)
