How many weeks are you and how many centimeters are you measuring??

I'm 35 weeks and measuring 34 cm, which my MW said was right on target.

The reason I'm asking this is because I'm tired of so many people telling me I look too small! 3 different people today asked me when my due date was and looked at me in horror when I told them July 17. One of the 3 people, a woman at Costco, asked if the baby was going to be ok, since I look so small. The way she said it made me feel so terrible, I wanted to cry.

This has been going on the whole pregnancy. It's stressing me out because it makes me feel like maybe I'm not eating enough or that baby is too small or something.

Mama to DS 7/23/08.

I would say don't worry about it at all. Different people carry different ways. Especially FTMs tend to look smaller. How your belly looks is very rarely an indication of the baby's health/size. For instance, a friend of mine and I looked about the same toward the end of our pregnancies (we're the same height and build, almost exactly! lol) My baby was 10 pounds, hers was 5 pounds. That's a heck of a difference!

I'm on the same page as you, and I am so sick of people giving me their opinions.

I've been measuring small too, 31 at 33 weeks, and 35 at 36 weeks. My midwife is not worried.

I think everyone that makes comments one way or the other is just trying to justify their own experiences. Some of us make smaller babies and carry the weight differently.

It depends greatly on your height, how you're carrying, the size of your baby, and how many pregnancies you've had.

I'm short, short-torsoed, I grow big babies, and it's my 4th, so I start getting the "Is it twins?" and "How many days left?" questions by 6 months. It is equally annoying.

Yep, same boat as you. I measure 35 weeks but I am 37 3/7. Same reaction from people when they hear my due date and I am really starting to worry. My doctor isn't worried, I am eating and taking my vitamins--what more can I do?

Just remember who's opinion really matters here. Your MW said you were right on target. That is the ONLY opinion that matters IMO.

Who cares what a bunch of strangers who probably know nothing about birth think?

I have had people tell me I look small and then less than 24 hours later ask me if I was sure I was only having one. All this does is remind me we are living in a culture where many folks have serious body issues and really can't imagine that anything other than their own warped body image would be ok. I just feel sad for them that they are unable to see past what they read in the tabloids or see on TMZ.

Trust yourself and your body.

Sorry, rant over.

I get this too, even though I have gained at least 40 lbs. People say, "oh, you are so small." Well, only in my front because I am tall and have a long torso. From the back, there is PLENTY of baby there. Just recently someone said, "I wasn't quite sure if you were pregnant or just gaining weight" (which also happened last time.) Good grief--for some reason people lose their filters around pregnant women. As long as you and your health care provider are comfortable with where you are, don't worry one bit. It is no one else's business.

Comparing myself to the pics in the belly shot thread, I look really small, and my OB even sent me in for an ultrasound because she thought I was small, but they estimated the baby is 7 pounds at 37 weeks... considering that a baby can gain 1/2-1 lb a week I could end up with a huge baby!

I think some women just look small depending on their body size/ type and how they're carrying, and how the baby is curled up in there.

My mom said to me today, "You look much more pregnant than you did yesterday."

What on earth is that supposed to mean?? I agree, you just have to ignore these things...

I don't know about my measurements, but I, too, have gotten lots of comments about how small I'm carrying (I'm 34 weeks). The comments started early on and when I said something to my MW she said I was fine, the baby was fine - that it has a lot to do with body type (I'm about 5'6" and have always been slender). She said that people would tell me I was too small and she I should not listen to them. She didn't want me to start over-eating in an attempt to get bigger and then have a really big baby.

I'm 34 weeks and 27cm.
My MW has no concern.

and yeah, I get dumb comments from strangers topo - but I did with my 2 larger pregnancies as well.

I'm sure your fine. Just put on invisable earmuffs to comments.

I'm 37 weeks and measuring 32cm. My midwife is not concerned and just says the baby's low, so the measurement is smaller. I've gained over 40 pounds, so it's certainly not from lack of food! I don't know how I "look" but I just try to take my MW's word that everything looks fine.

the week my baby dropped I went from 37cm to 34 cm. My midwives just said she's just down in my pelvis now.

Yesterday I got at least 3 "you look so small" comments when people asked when I am due (July 8th). It really, really annoyed me because I feel so huge and uncomfortable.

Size really means nothing and has no correlation with the size of your baby.
I learned this last pg when a pg friend and I went out to dinner together in our 9th month (we were due about a week apart). Everyone stopped and asked her when she was due and didn't even know I was pg! And it wasn't clothes because it was summer and we were both wearing maternity dresses.
At my next appointment I asked my mw about this because it bothered me so much. My mw said I just have really good abdominal muscles and hold in my baby really well (which surprised me because I'm not an athletic person!).

Well lo and behold, when our babies were born, mine weighed more than a pound more than hers.

Moral:
different bodies carry babies differently-- it has absolutely nothing to do with the size your baby will be!

also:
people just say stupid things to pg women!

I wouldn't worry about it! Two women who are measuring exactly the same can look completely different. In my first pregnancy I was so big everyone thought it was twins, in this one people can't believe i'm due in less than 3 weeks.

I guess I have looked really small all along--I didn't hardly show until about 6 months--and I was measuring a little behind at my 30 week appointment, so my OB sent me in for an US. The US technician measured that baby is in the 84th percentile for size, about 4.5 lbs at 31 weeks! My OB was happy to hear it, and said something about how I was carrying the baby, maybe that she's sitting low, or that my uterus is tilted a little back, or something. I also have a long torso, and have always been slim.

I'd say don't worry, just enjoy it!

Not from this DDC, but yeah I have people tell me I am small one day and then ask me when I am due the next, I say mid august and they look at me like they've seen a ghost and say, are you sure there's only one in there

Being pregnant is like wearing a sign on your back that says, "I am pregnant, it's okay to give me your opinion!!"

I am measuring around 2 weeks ahead, which would put me at my original dd according to my LMP... so we will see! My belly is very full and everyone keeps telling me I'll go earlier so opposite boat as you are.

However, up until about 7 wks ago I wasn't showing much at all and everyone always made comments and I know how frustrating it can be on both ends! As long as your baby is good then your body is perfect

With my son I measured right on every single week, but, I could have easily hidden my pregnancy until right about 38.5 weeks when all the sudden I just popped.

This time around I'm still measuring right on, but I looked how I did at 42 weeks with my son at about 30 weeks!

Chiming in here!

I'm totally in the same boat, so its good to see this thread up. 37/38 weeks along here and, although I feel huge, I keep getting the comment "but you're so tiny. You're probably going to have a tiny baby.": However, like all you ladies, MW doesnt seem worried at all.

Thanks for posting this, I feel like I'm at the exact opposite extreme of the "wow, you're so huge" spectrum.

I agree with everyone else. Try not to let other people's comments affect you. Your care provider isn't worried so you don't need to either.

As a point of comparison, I am 5'7" and started this pregnancy around 110Lbs. I am now 140lbs. At my 35 week appt I was 32 cm. I am following the exact same growth curve as I did with ds. People think I'm only about 5 months along. And yet, ds was a healthy 8Lbs 2 oz. I just carry my babies differently than other people.

Hugs to you. I know from experience how tiring the comments get. Just as it is insensitive to go on about how big someone is, it is also not cool to go on about how small someone is. Way to make a mama feel inadequate!

Like everyone else said, don't worry about comments. Too many people just talk and don't even know what they are talking about. Everyone is different, and since it is your first, you don't have a guideline to go by, and just making it up as you go!

You sound perfectly right to me.

they are placed there for the amusement of those who like to point them out.

These posts about being "too big" or "too small" have got me thinking:
has a pg woman ever gotten the comment:
"Oh you are the perfect size for how pg you are. You must be growing a perfect sized baby who will be born on it's perfect due date."

The fact that we are all either too big or too small just shows how messed up people's issues with women's bodies are in our society.
