So...we have MRSA going around the NICU and my ds tested positive. So now he's quaranteened, on antibiotics, and we're all going to get tested too. LOVELY! This just sucks-I cant even get myself water or anything now and they're treating him like a lepper (and me). It took 30 minutes to get a nurse in to check his weight after his feed yesterday, both times I was there. Anyway, this sucks!

Oh mama, that sucks.

Dont know. They sent out a letter about 2 weeks ago saying they had *reports of MRSA in the nicu*-I'm assuming this meant a baby had it. They said they would be testing all the babies and staff at that time in order to try and isolate it and determine where it started. They finally did the tests a few days ago and several babies came up positive, including mine.

According to the nurse I had last night, they still dont know where it started. Luckily this wont hold him up unless he has outward signs of the infection.

This is one of my biggest fears about birthing in a hospital - I am so sorry you guys are in this position!

I'm assuming that the positive culture just means he has it on his skin (just like regular aureous) - but he doesn't have an infection?

Hang in there!!

(and P.S. is this at Evergreen? Eek!)

Yeah, he has a positive culture from his nose but no active infection. And yes, this is at Evergreen.

ugh, that sucks. I am a critical care nurse and know how much of a pain the rear MRSA is. It really is amazing how many people are colonized with MRSA and never even know it. Hang in there!

So in : with E and G...give the ultimate gift:

hopping over from oct ddc, I saw the title on new posts....

My ds had an active MRSA infection after pyloric stenosis syrgery at 3 weeks old.... The infection started in his incision.... so it definately came from the freaking hospital.

He has had 3 flare ups since then and he just turned 2.

I wanted to offer my support and say how sorry I am. I really hope he doesnt develop an active infection.

Feel free to pm me if you want too.

We had a few years of fighting MRSA with my father (who obviously picked it up with all of his hospitalizations), which was transferred to just about everyone in our household. Apparently lots of people are positive with MRSA, but it's not infectious in most. The antibiotics are pretty nasty and very long to take. Our family ended up getting skin infections, but we finally got rid of them all with.....not antibiotics...tea tree oil. It was amazing!!! So if you notice any swelling spots try dabbing some tea tree oil on it right away. Hopefully he'll just be one that gets colonized but not an active infection!! My heart is so with you...like you really needed this on top of everything!!!!! GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!

Well at least I have good news! He's having his carseat test today or tomorrow and providing he continues keeping his sats up, he gets to come home friday! OMG I might have a baby here in 2 days....I need to go shopping.

I'm a wee bit worried though-I have a spot on my arm. We had MRSA years ago (which was extremely annoying to get rid of) and well, it could be from that. So I'm getting ALL of us tested now. Ughhhhhhh.

Awesome that he's coming home!! Ok...from so much experience...put tea tree oil on a bandaid and put it over that spot..now!! It goes so quick if it is an infection and that's the LAST thing you need. Good luck!

Wow, how scarey. I am sorry you are having to deal with this. Like you really need more stress.

On a brighter note, YIPEE he's coming home!!!!!!!!!

How did your car seat test go?

Does your NICU make you room-in before going home? Our hospital requires it but since I have 4 kiddos and JT was my 3rd NICU baby they didn't make me to stay over night they just put me in a patient room with him alone for a few hours each day to work on breastfeeding.

Oh DN, I hope he gets to come home tomorrow, also! We are rooming in tonight with all 3 of ours and they will be home tomorrow!

In our case, the rooming in isn't required (we're there 6-8 hours a day anyway) but 2 are doing slightly better than the third, and rooming in is a way to get insurance to pay for another night for those two while we observe the third a little longer. This way, they can all come home together!
