I know that sounds DUMB but I have heardt he term but never really understood it.
I want to home school my kids. My dd (4) atteneded joy school this year. I taught every 4th week as the mothers rotated teaching. It was such a great experience. I guess in a sense i am homeschooling now. My dd can go to kindergarten until aug 2006, and she laready knows what they say a kid should know when LEAVING K. If i puther in public school she will be so bored. and i cant stop teaching her now while I wait for 2006. She is a very smart girl who retains everyhting around her. Never fails to amaze me....

anyway thank you

Melissa- homeschooling mom to Samantha ( 9) Gabby ( 8) Emma (6) and Diesel (12 months) and Rachel Rebecca Brock Erik Joe Noah 6-25-10 5 early miscarriages

If you do a quick search here at MDC with the term unschooling you are likely to get at least a few threads where it's been discussed

In a nutshell unschooling is education directed by the learner rather than by a teacher/parent. The student is in charge of their own learning. Unschoolers tend to see learning as a product of just living, and feel that we do not need mandatory assignments, schedules, or grades placed on our educations. Unschoolers feel they are learning in all that they do not just while doing things that have been deemed "educational" like reading.

Read The Unschooling Handbook and vist Unschooling.com. Also, anything by John Holt. He is the founder of unschooling and the grandfather of the homeschooling movement.

The unschooling.com forums are closed. There is a newer forum at unschooling.info

Unschooling is living life as if school didn't exist. There are no tests, no curriculum, no parental agenda. It is about trusting your child to know what she needs to learn and following her lead. You do not "teach" at all. But that does not mean that you are hands off. When she becomes interested in something, you help her to learn about it and build on it and you are always welcome to bring up things that you think will interest her...and she is welcome to say "no, thanks, not interested" when she isn't. There is a yahoo group for beginners to unschooling called unschoolingbasics....it is set up for the basics but there are a lot of very experienced unschoolers there to help.
