Hi Everyone,

I had the pleasure of attending and participating in a panel discussion about un/homeschoolers of color at the Learning in Our Own Way conference in the Boston area over the weekend.
For me, what started out as a great opportunity to get the word out about unschoolers of color, turned into making connections with families that I hope to stay connected with for a long time to come. I also had the added benefit of getting to share several meals together with them, including a great raw meal at a restaurant in a nearby town where the conference was being held. The food was incredible!
During the panel, we spoke about how to find and support homeschoolers of color. It was for me a very satisfying conversation.
I was asked specifically about the growth of homeschooling in the Black community, and why more Black families weren't choosing it as an option given the state of public schools today(I answered that there are more homeschoolers of color than is acknowledged).
And we were all asked if there were any differences in un/homeschooling children of color(sometimes it can be pretty isolating, being the "only ones" in a support group). After the panel, I was pulled aside by several people who wanted to know more about a online group that I belong to(www.afamunschool.com) and how it came to be. I was very encouraged by some of those conversations.
I am hopeful to have some of the same experiences when I host a funshop at the Live and Learn Unschooling conference(www.liveandlearnconference.org) in St Louis in October that I experienced this weekend, getting the word out about unschoolers of color and being able to make connections with other families that are unschooling too.
So if you live near St Louis and are available October 6th through 9th, I would love to see you. The conference is so popular this year, they have had to add a second hotel to accommodate all of the attendees(at last count, it was over 300 that have pre-registered, so they expect over 600 attendees by conference time). I hope that many more families of color attend this year(come on Saint Louis and mid-western members!).
I will take many of the comments and suggestions that I heard this weekend with me to the conference in October.
I hope to meet some of you there as well.
