Today, in the space of about 45 minutes, the kids and I discussed:

anaerobic vs. aerobic
venous blood vs. arterial blood
rubella and its potential effects on an unborn baby
tuberculosis
tetanus
vaccinations
Alexander Graham Bell
the meaning of "belle" in French
clever word plays, as in the company name "Southern Bell"
organ transplants

...all because I was reading a book about Helen Keller and ds asked, "Isn't she the girl who was blind and deaf?" : I love when a discussion about one thing leads to something completely unrelated/unexpected. Plain old conversation is so underrated!

Wow so much to say! Everyone is doing so much neat stuff -- living and enjoying life with our kiddos!

Majikfaerie, congrats and wow! What an amazing place!

Earth Angel, congrats on your new place too!

I've been away from the computer for a while -- actually I've been spending my 'free' time trying to clean up around here. Ds was away camping and fishing with dh and my brother, and I actually managed to get a bunch of stuff out of here (donated, recycled, and garbaged, sigh).

Ds had such an amazing time away, I wish he could live like that all the time. He soaked up so much life and learning. Fishing alone, wow. My bro is quite the fisherman -- knows the laws and regulations, taught ds about the weights, line, casting, etc. etc.

Oh, kiddo I'm watching today is here. Gotta run!

THAT's the truth!!

Yesterday, we were expecting friends to come over, but since it was so hot, we decided to all go to the shore instead. Horribly hot and humid at home, was warm and breezy at the beach (yeah!) The water was super cold, but it didn't stop four of the kids from going in. Then they built sand castles and collected rocks and shells and dead things. The big kids rounded up about 15 others and played football in the sand, then broke into smaller groups and played Magic and otherwise messed around. We met some other friends, some acquaintences, and some new friends, so it was a great day. Oh, AND it was free beach concert day to boot, so we listened to some Jazz as the sun set.

Today, so far, dd has been writing and is now baking what smells like brownies (yum.) ds2 has a friend over, and I'm about to take ds1 to meet some of his friends (one of which is visiting from France and will be going home on Sat.)

gosh, my kids are soooo unsocialized, lol.

You sure have, but glad it's all good stuff (except for the icky cold). Congrats on your new home.

Today dd asked (yes, *asked*, lol) if she could please wash the dishes (like I'm gonna say no!). Later, she asked if she could please give the dog a bath. I guess it was too much to hope for for her to ask if she could please clean her room, but I'm happy with a tidy kitchen and fresh-smelling pooch. So here's me thinking she's being all sweet and helpful, and she just delivered an envelope addressed to me. Inside was a hand-written, itemized bill for her work! I'll have to do my own chores in the future; I can't afford her! She cracks me up.

Ha, a bill! Make her a big bowl of ice cream or something to settle up.

Well it's the last day of June unschoolers! I can't believe it has gone by this fast. My Dd, step Dd, and Dh are on their way to take the girls to a Fall Out Boy concert. Dd is a bundle of happy energy. Then tomorrow we get another teen and head off to the forest for the next 30 hours or so.

I am baking my booty off, and trying to find all the tent poles.

Huh. On OUR coast, tomorrow is the last day of June. : Have fun on your trip!

I LOL at the bill--she's right on top of things, eh?

We had an 8 y/o spend the night with us (in trade for my 16 y/o, it seems.) Ds2 and his friend had a great time. Ds1 also did, but they stayed up ALL night and he's been sleeping the day away. We're installing flooring today, so that's been an education, dd is making dinner for everyone. We've decided to start feeding our dog a raw diet, so we've had lots of discussion about nutrition, "natural" diets, food chains, costs of different cuts of meat, the ethics involved with vegetarian humans living with carnivorous pets--all kinds of things! Plus, what spurred this decision was that we suspect our pup may have hip dysplasia so we're learning all about bone growth, cartilage, arthritis and other stuff.

Ha! I am such a dork. Why did I think today was the last day of the month? Oy... I blame lack of chocolate.

I hope your doggy does well on her new diet!

No worries... chocolate deficiency is now well under control thanks to brownies! I ate one too many, but I did have a bunch of veggies before hand so that means I am a little responsible.

When did taking a trip become so much work? I remember I used to be able to grab a small bag with a hair brush, clean underwear, a hoodie, and some cash in it and run out the door. Now I better start 3 days ahead of time! :

Well, she does love ice cream, and it has helped me out of many a bind, but she's clued us in to her bigger plan. She wants a new game and is trying to "earn" money. We've never done set chores or allowances, so she's come up with this on her own. She knows that she could just ask us for it, but I think she wants to do this herself. Very cool.

UnschoolnMa, enjoy your trip. Glad you got your chocolate fix. :-)

I did the exact same thing when I was about 8; washed the dog and gave my mum an itemised bill.
she came right back at me with a bill for water usage, dog shampoo, kennel rent and dog food!
