aww... i snuggled my raccoon, danny, to sleep every night from age 4 till after casi was born (and we ran outta room in the bed). at age 19 my raver friends gave me a curious george doll, so he joined the party.

i really have to say that i'm glad to be the "special thing" C prefers to fall asleep with.

yeah, I guess back in the 70s everyone got into weird stuff. even barbie and ken.
since I was a kid in the 80s, ken has painted on underpants.

I had a funny dream last night with ruthlas dd2 in it; she was an au pair for mammarabbit!

We had a pretty fun day today, first dd1 didn't want to go to preschool today (yes, yes, she goes to "play" there 2x a week, so I ahve some alone time with dd2, we walk to it and it's a Mandarin immersion preschool that I helped build for 3 years, however I already phased her out from 4 days to 2 and plan to unschool her and not do to K), so we went to gym class with dd2, even though I had to sneak her in, since only one adult can watch one kid, but now I had 2. It was fun, though I didn't let her do the bigger stuff like trampolines as not to raise suspicion.

After that we went to the US Park Police barn where I worked before she was born, said hello to the horses, went to the beach, had a picnic and looked at books in a cafe. Then we went home, took a nap, and then after that we drove across the Golden Gate Bridge to the Marin Headlands and visited the fire station for a good 2 hours. It was so much fun. Dd1 wants to be a firefighter and our house is now officially called "station 8". She knows a lot about firefighting already, since we have friends who are captains here and they let her spray the hoses, sit in the fire engine, and answer every question she has. Her favorite firefighter is a woman and she drives the big ladder truck.

MF- that's so funny you had a dream about DD2 babysitting- right now DD1 and DD2 are at a friend's house babysitting a 2yo. She needed to be at the school at 9:30 for some program her kindergartner was having, and she didn't want to wake her toddler to take him along. I had the girls in the car with me, on the way to the supermarket, when my friend called. IT turns out that her 13yo missed the school bus and needed them NOW, not in 40 minutes, so I dropped the girls off and then went shopping alone, instead of shopping with them and then dropping them off on the way home.

Even though she has all but her 2yo in school this year (she'd HSed her 9yo the 2nd half of last year and was agonizing over the decision this past August) she's very appreciative that we're still a HSing family!

I'm so tired right now. Besides bringing in the groceries all by myself today, the fibromyalgia is acting up again. I wonder if I should go back to bed...but I have all this really yummy coffee. The store where I shop roasts their own coffee beans, so this coffee was roasted no more than a day ago, possibly this morning, and was definitely ground this morning. It's so yummy!!!

A compromise? Coffee in bed?

Our bad car karma wasn't over, evidently. The car got a flat just as dh was leaving to work. Glad it didn't happen half way to work! So he took public transport in which meant he'd be late. He was SO stressed about that, worrying about getting fired . He just doesn't have confidence people will respond reasonably to a reasonable situation after having worked for so many irrational people. But things come in threes, supposedly, so the car stuff should be clear for a while after this third thing, lol.

Ds is feeling better though he still has his cold. Usually the first day is the worst for him. He is eager to go to Chuck E Cheeses again.

Going to a unschooling group today. A friend has been trying to get me to go, the time is a difficult time for us but thought we would try it anyway.

Went to the movies last night. A treat for us as its so expensive. It was called the Cans Film Festival. Bring in three cans of food per person and get a free ticket and free small popcorn. : So we got to see Walle with some friends and help the food bank all in one.

Kids are eating french toast and I should be starting laundry...

Oh no, car troubles just suck! Our van is on its last leg but we just had to replace a load if things so hoping it will last a bit longer. We so cannot afford a car payment right now.

ruthla... mmmm, fresh roasted and ground coffee!
the absolute best coffee was in Ethiopia. they roast the beans, just enough for one pot, on a little charcoal burner right in front of you, then hand grind with a mortar and pestle. mmmmm!

4ever, that sucks about the car.

We had a great day. Went to an unschooling group called ACE for the first time. The kids had a blast. When DH got home Maddy told him that ACE is the funnest place ever. Came home and Madeline made homemade blackberry syrup to go on pancakes for dinner. Read some Harry Potter.

Well, dh's employer was greatly impressed he ditched the car and got to work as fast as possible by bus.

Now, the car got the flat a block away and he just drove back into the garage so it wasn't like abandoning the car half way to work in an illegal parking spot or anything.

And she was also impressed that the flat was fixed in time for me to pick up dh from work. So we both impressed her with our efficiency and priorities.

Not that I actually did anything (my mom took care of it since that was so much easier than towing around an unhappy child. Ds isn't thrilled with waiting around when he could be home doing stuff. Plus he's still sick.)

Ds's tooth came out yesterday. The tooth fairy brought him a gold mining kit. It's like those dino dig kits but with gold pyrite AKA Fool's Gold. So he has been having fun with that while watching Saturday morning cartoons.
nomadmom's Avatar nomadmom 02:53 PM 09-28-2008
The gold mining kit from the tooth fairy is such a cute idea, and the whole Barbie conversation had me!

We did lots of outdoor stuff last week. I took my kids and niece on a 3-hour hike on the moors. It was awesome--so gorgeous up there. I especially enjoyed watching my 17 y.o. ds run and climb and laugh like a little kid.

On Thursday, we had a picnic with some new home ed families and some others that we hadn't seen in a long time.

Dd (who goes horse riding weekly) has been begging me to go on a trail ride with another mom/daughter from her riding school. I hadn't been on a horse in 14 years (and even then, I just got on and hoped for the best -- never had any instruction), so I knew I'd need a lesson before I was fit to go out. Well, I had my first lesson Thursday evening, and dd said she was proud of me. I don't think I'm quite ready for a ride out, but it's a start.

We're having a relaxing family day at home today. Dh is glued to the tv watching all the financial/political news. The kids played out back with the dog for a little while, and now ds (who stayed at a friend's house Fri. and Sat. night) is on the pc in my/dh's room catching up on his emails. Dd is curled up on our bed reading a Hardy Boys book.

We're super busy getting ready for Rosh Hashonna- a lot more cleaning going on than spiritual lessons of the holiday, but, hey, it needs to get done!

It's for all those random things relating to unschooling that one doesn't want to start a whole new thread about. Just a "what we've been up to" sort of thing with tangents welcome.

shanah tovah!
I had this great plan to make electronic shanot tovot (hebrew new years greeting cards) by getting dd to sing a traditional new year song in hebrew, and filming it, and putting it on youtube, and sending the link to all our family.
the only hole in the plan was that i needed dp to teach dd the song, since i don't know one. only he didn't get it together to do it oh well.
since i'm not technically jewish, and not really a family member, and not even in israel, no one will wonder why i didn't send any cards. but still. i'm disappointed. I'll do an e-card with pics of dd instead.
Ruthla's Avatar Ruthla 05:02 PM 09-29-2008
I sent an e-card to my brother and SIL, and that's it. I invited a friend of the family for a holiday meal, and my SILs, (ok, technically they're not married because the USA doesn't recognize same-sex marriages, and technically neither of them is my SIL since I've been divorced from her brother for the past 10 years, but I still think of both of them as my SILs) and it turns out that all 3 of them are coming for dinner on Tuesday night, rather than having one guest for one meal and the couple coming for another meal. We're busy busy busy cooking and cleaning today, with very short breaks in between. Right now I'm taking a break.
BedHead 07:38 PM 09-29-2008
Oh my, I need to duck in here for a moment and collect my thoughts. The other board I'm on is having a debate about a school policy that won't allow a parent to escort their young child who doesn't know their way around to their classroom during class time - the school wanted the kid to find their own way. Ug. I just can't believe that people think this is ever OK.

OK. Anyway. I wish I was at home cleaning my house Ruthla! It NEEDS it. I'm stuck at work instead. Dd has been traipsing off to the mall every day with friends and having sleepovers at our place and other kids' places. She's hardly been home in the last 5 days - Whoever said homeschooled kids have trouble socializing must meet my daughter! Although I guess it's different for her, since she did meet these other kids in school in the first place. We were going to try to go to a 4 hour 'draw a cat' workshop this weekend but that isn't going to pan out.

We're thinking of going camping Thanksgiving weekend (which is Oct 10-13 here in Canada) and it could be quite : out - are we nuts?
4evermom's Avatar 4evermom 08:09 PM 09-29-2008
I have a friend going camping that weekend though I guess we're a little further south, lol.

We went to Chuck E Cheese's again, today. Ds had an awesome time and made some temporary friends so I actually got to just sit and crochet.

The bus rides were quite educational , though most of the things that went on went over ds's head. I thought a fight was going to break out when one woman took exception to how a man was eyeing her and her demonstrative girlfriend. Fortunately the racial and sexual slurs that were exchanged ran together since they were talking fast so ds mostly didn't pick up the actual words.

On the way home, Ds chose a seat near some guys who turned out to be recently released felons. They were giddily reveling in their freedom which attracted the attention of another guy who told them his life story, personal felony experiences, etc. I wasn't sure which way the conversation was going to turn but he ended up giving the first two advice about getting jobs (avoiding the prejudice against hiring convicted felons) and avoiding their old crowds. Ds actually fell asleep so missed most of this, too.

And we got off the bus at home to a police car zipping around breaking something up.

ruthla, that sounds like our dinner.
it started as one family inviting another family over for dinner at their house. then they invited someone else, and someone else invited someone else...
they ended up having to book a hall to host a potluck buffet for 65 people!
: israelis.
but dp made some friends, which is good.

bedhead, sounds hectic

4ever : that's some crazy @#$%!

i'm in maine and no WAY would i camp past halloween. even that's damned risky!!
: : : : :

i'm havin a hard time gettin C out of the house. i don't plan a lot of stuff and i could do more of that. he gets SO wrapped up in his star wars, though- making paper crafts (light sabers, droids) and "making movies". i'm trying to get comfortable letting him roll with this a bit longer- he's learning tons as he's doing it, of course- until he signals that he wants to see friends or hit the playground again.
