My homeopathic Dr. here in MX says that if the penis is protracted then the baby needs to be circumcised. I am sure that this is not true, but since it has been a while since I´ve reviewed the circ. info, I didn´t know how to respond.

We are expecting our second child, this time a baby boy, but when I was preg. with dd (before we knew the gender) we did all of the research and decided to leave baby intact.

Is there any situation where caregivers would push for circumcism?

Just want to be prepared!
Thanks

I've never heard of a 'protracted' penis, has anyone else? Do you think he meant 'retracted'? Babies should never be retracted ever.

Be suspicious of anyone who wants to circumcise your baby. There are very few reasons for it ever.

The dictionary definition of 'protracted' is literally, to draw forward. So that is sort of why I'm confused about that, lol!

Maybe someone with more knowledge can answer this one?

Good for you for looking into this! There are a lot of great articles and info, make sure to check the stickies at the top of the page.

Circ doesn't work! Stop the violence of circumcison. Had another UP/UC/HB in August!

i have been researching circumcision for 5 years, and have never heard of a protracted penis before your post.
i have also yet to hear of a medical reason to circ in infancy. things like phimosis, or the forseskin being too tight to let urine out, can be helped with manual stretching and steroid cream, but these are very, very rare in infants.

Or very common. Its natural and normal for the foreskin to be fused with the penis head in infancy, so seeing such a thing is normal, and nothing needs to be "fixed".

Never heard the term protracted penis before today.

But as to medical reasons for circ they are:
Frostbite
Gangrene
Cancer
Irripairable damage
& on occasion diabetic men will need it just like they might need a foot amputated.

All the other reasons you hear about like infection, none retractable etc can be fixed 99.9% of the time using stretching, steroid creams or abx.

Some helpful information can be found here on normal and not normal thngs related to the intact penis http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=764732

I've never heard of 'protracted penis'. A cursory google search came up with only one response and that was this:

Causes and Treatment of the Protracted Penis

Even in these cases, circumcision is not recommended as a treatment . Apparently, not allowing your infant to swim in fetid water can prevent protracted penis in th first place.

The only medically warranted reason for circumcision is gangrene, frostbite and possibly cancer. There is no reason for infant circumcision.

I actually learned something new today :

Quote:
An exposed penis (called "penis paralysis," "phallus prostration," or "protracted penis") most frequently occurs when a drake is not given ample access to clean swimming water. If one of your flock members exhibits this trait, serious considerations to the availability of swimming water in his living environment should be taken -- now and going forward. If you are certain that lack of water is not the issue, over exertion during the mating season, infection, genetic tendency and old age can also be factors.
Drake = male duck.

OMW unless your ds has feathers then I can safely say he will never suffer this condition.

I am so hoping that this "Dr" said the wrong word or that you misunderstood because if not this homeopathic Dr. is either a total "quack" (pun intended, sorry couldnt resist that one ) or he studied to be a vet. first.

Perfect! You just tell the doc that the day you give birth to a duck is the day he can circ. :

The condition that is being described for ducks sounds kind of similar to paraphimosis, the Dr maybe slightly confused about the translation (assuming he isn't a native english speaker.) There are ofcourse less drastic treatments for paraphimosis than circ.

Or else he is just a quack! LOL Damn I crack myself up!

Anyway, very few reasons why you'd want circ. Is it something they offer at hospitals in Mexico?

I wondered if people could have protracted penises. We had a duck that "had an outie" it was because the stupid bird was afarid of water.

I agree with PPs, if your LO has feathers, the Doc is free to cut off whatever he likes.

I know there is RETRACT penis, where it hides in the "fat pad" in severe cases you can have surgery. Thats entirely different and you don't need to circ for that

That would be a hidden penis and is more than likely caused by circumcision...not cured by it. There is a surgery that can be done that releases a tendon and gives a hidden penis more mobility though.
