My niece was watching me change Bede while we were at my mother's house for Christmas. I took this as an opportunity to say "Boy I sure am glad we left you just the way you came out of me, little guy," or some words to that effect. Niece says "What do you mean?" I say "Well, Bede is not circumcised." She says "Well of course he isn't, we aren't Jewish..." which was funny, in a sad sort of naive way...
I then let her in on the fact that in America, most boys, either Gentile or Jew, and certainly most of the boys her age, are in fact circumcised "because doctors used to think it was the right thing to do." After getting past her shock, she says "That's gross! They know it's stupid to do it now, right?" I said yes, but many doctors still advise it because they seem to think that little boys must look just like their fathers, who have had their penises cut.
Get this! She rolled her eyes and said "I suppose that means if the dad has lost his little finger in an accident they need to cut off all his kids' fingers too? No way they are doing that to any of MY sons."
So, it would seem in ten or 15 years we could have another wee intact boy in my family
The tide is turning, I know it is turning.
