I have heard this statistic a lot and can't find the links to verify the information. Does anyone have it? The quote is: "More babies die EVERY YEAR from circumcision in the United States than those who die from choking, car accidents, SIDS or suffocation."

Thanks,
Lisa

I don't have the chance now to search for my link, but what you quoted is not the entire truth. More babies die in the neonatal period (first 30 days) from circ than from SIDS (in the first 30 days). More babies die from SIDS in their first 6 months than from circ. I don't know how many babies die from choking, car accidents, etc. The only comparison I've heard/read is on neonatal circ vs. neonatal SIDS.

Of course, circ deaths are thought to be vastly underreported.

This claims are referring to Bollinger's (2010) study, which estimated approximately 117 neonatal deaths per year from circumcision in the US, and then went on to say that this is higher than the annual number of deaths due to SIDS, choking, car accidents, etc. during the NEONATAL period. As the PP pointed out, this is only referring to deaths in the first month of life, but the stat is often not phrased correctly. In addition, I do not know how true the number actually is because I read the article and did not agree with the "common-sense calculations" used to come up with this estimate.

I have a pdf version of the article, but I think this is a web copy:

ETA: Yes, I'm quite sure that is the same article I read. It is an interesting read.

Oh, and the article says:
"Sudden infant-death syndrome (SIDS) killed 1 ,216 boys under the age of one year in 2004; of those, 115 were under the age of 1 month (CDC)."

It would appear that all other numbers used (besides SIDS) represented for the whole year rather than just the neonatal period.
