My son is almost 4. When he was a baby I read that by the age of 3 the foreskin should be retractable due to the child's our manipulation. I an a bit concerned because his doesn't. In the back of my mind I keep thinking that this is like so many other things, each child is a little different and he is fine. But I just don't have the experience to know.

There is a big range of normal. It can happen anytime from birth thru puberty. My ds is 4 1/2 and doesn't retract yet. Your son is perfectly normal!!

My ds first retracted this past fall--very exciting--he called me into the bath to show me his "other penis" since then he doesn't do it much--he says that it hurts to touch the head. No worries here. Everyone is different.

Mama to ds 6/00 and dd 1/09

My ds's retracted between ages 3 and 5, but some boys don't retract until puberty.

His foreskin will retract when it's good and ready, sometime between now and puberty.

From the AAP:

"What Is Foreskin Retraction?

Sometime during the first several years of your son's life, his foreskin, which covers the head of the penis, will separate from the glans. Some foreskins separate soon after birth or even before birth, but this is rare. When it happens is different for every child. It may take a few weeks, months or years.

After the foreskin separates from the glans, it can be pulled back away from the glans toward the abdomen. This is called foreskin retraction.

Most boys will be able to retract their foreskins by the time they are 5 years old, yet others will not be able to until the teenage years. As a boy becomes more aware of his body, he will most likely discover how to retract his own foreskin. But foreskin retraction should never be forced. Until separation occurs, do not try to pull the foreskin back — especially an infant's. Forcing the foreskin to retract before it is ready may severely harm the penis and cause pain, bleeding and tears in the skin. "

Thank all of you! It is funny how just a few reassuring statements can create such a relief.
