Yesterday my DH and I noticed that the tip of DS's penis was red. Then after his bath, when we were putting on his nighttime diaper, there was a tiny bit of blood coming out. We called the doctor, and then went in today. The doc retracted his foreskin a bit and it was super red and infected (really gross) looking underneath. He said it's just a bacterial infection and gave me some oral antibiotic to give DS for 10 days. Is there anything else I can/should do for him? I read in the Mothering article "Protect Your Uncircumcised Son" that we should use an antibacterial ointment and acidopholus -- how much of the latter and in what form? And what kind of ointment?

Thank you for your help!

I heard that mother's milk is good against infection. I personally have not tried it, but you are supposed to put it directly on the infection. Some moms swear by it. It's worth a try.

How old is your son? Can he take yogurt with live acidophylis?

Never give bubble baths and don't use any other strong soaps.
Keep him out of chlorinated swimming pools.
Let him run naked as much as possible.

I hope the antibiotic is doing the trick by now.

The one time my youngest son had a problem was actually after his first doctor (wrongly!) retracted him at 4 months. It took several days for him to not be red or irritated anymore there, but I mixed breastmilk with vaseline and put it on. I've also used just straight breastmilk. Works wonders! Also works on ear infections, eye infections, and gooky noses!

Most Health Food Stores sell a liquid acidopholous complex formulated for children. Follow dosage on the label.
