In another thread Laila wrote, "Circumcision is no longer covered in The Province of Manitoba. Yay!!"

Do you have any more information on this? When did they stop paying? Has it been reported in newspapers yet?

Two years ago my-then-dh was telling a pregnant co-worker not to circumcise (ultrasound announcement) and she said "we weren't gonna . . . besides they now charge (?)$200(?)"

Having some more comprehensive information posted here may indeed prove useful for those asking questions such as these.

I'll see what I can find.

She and I used the same hospital. Could it be that only that hospital has begun to charge? I haven't found any pertinent info yet.

And it's late. I must be tired. I thought I just read that the good doctor cut my son's penis (in 1998) for less than twenty bucks.

I'm going to bed now. I don't think I'll be on the boards tomorrow. I feel like spending the whole day with my two boys.

It's my understanding that Canada's national health care plan de-listed circumcision nationally meaning that it is not covered in any province and that has been a major factor in the substantial drop in the circumcision rate. It's a re-run of what happened in Great Britian in the early 1950's.

My son was born five years ago in British Columbia, Canada. At prenatal class, a family asked about circumcision and the teacher said it was something to discuss with your doctor after you left the hospital. I think she said it cost $150. She also said if that was their decision, NOT to discuss it with the nurses at the hospital because they are very against it. I hope that fact changed some of their minds.

Yep, my midwife told me circumcision is considered plastic surgery now. Not sure if all over Canada, or just Ontario though...

Canadas health care system is provincial,(governed by each individual province) not national. Circumcision coverage(along with other coverages) varies province to province. I think in the same sort of way that medicare does in the U.S.

This is a link to the rates per province and the date that the province stopped covering circumcision.(If it stopped)
