I saw an ad on tv today for the show "Freebirthing" tonight at 9pm on Discovery. It is about unassisted homebirths. And of course they are wondering if it is safe, etc. I am going to try to stay up to watch. Anyone else see this?

My MIL called me and told me about it. I'm not sure if I want to watch it or not. I'm a little bit more pro-medicine than that. I might watch part of it and see.

I've heard it's relatively balanced, assuming they didn't alter the (UK) original too much.

We don't get that channel, though, so I'll be waiting for it to show up on youtube or something.

Thanks so much for the reminder. I would have totally forgotten. In fact, it is on now, but I am missing with recording two other shows on the DVR. So, I set it to record the second time it airs tonight.

Mama to Ava (12/03) , Leila (4/06) , Violet (11/08) , and bonus mama to Madison (7/98)

I just watched it. It was a lot more balanced than I thought it was going to be, which made me very happy. I wish that they had pointed out to a better extent that these women are getting prenatal care, they are just doing it themselves. It isn't like most of us are having more done than a fundal measurement and bp reading.

What I thought was the best/most effective part was when toward the end the British OB said something similar to: if homebirth with a midwife were more readily available then maybe more women wouldn't feel that they needed to UC in order to have their wishes respected. I know that a lot of women chose it even if they can have a homebirth; however, my husband and I considered it because we felt that we really had no other option that really met our birthing desires and because there isn't a good deal of homebirth support in the U.S. from insurance companies. (We've had to compromise our birth wishes for the sake of our finances, and we're going to birth center.)

I would just love a FRACTION of the mental dicipline the WElsh woman had in order to have a totally pain free birth. I mean my GOSH!!!! It was almost creepy how calm her AND the baby were. and how she did EVERYTHING herself. I was so shaky after DS finally came out, I was worried I wouldnt be able to hold him!

I watched it and it was pretty good. Laura Shanley is on MDC and on the UC forum thread about the show.
