My youngest got a little cut on his finger from the handsaw we used to cut our christmas tree yesterday. It was a little cut but it bled a fair amount.
Does this warrant a precautionary tetanus shot? If it does, is it worth going across town and paying 80 dollars to get a seperate tetanus shot or should he get the DTP?
Thanks for any input you can give!

Tetanus shots don't even have time to work by the time tetanus would show up. And it doesn't occur in wounds that bleed.

It would have shown up already from what I've read.

So you can't get a tetanus shot AFTER coming in contact with something? I got a shot as a kid when I stepped on a rusty nail.
Would he be presenting symptoms already if he did have tetanus?
And why would it matter if you are bleeding or not? It is an outdoor saw blade so rust is likely to be present and I assume you could still get rust poisining even if you bleed.

Okay, it looks like his cut isn't as deep as I first thought. Since it's not very deep I probably have nothing to worry about.
I wouldn't have even thought about it if my Mom hadn't freaked out about it. Rusty things scare her, old info I suppose.

Incubation period is 2-21 days so it could take a while before symptoms start. Bleeding is good since the bacteria is anaerobic. Its takes awhile before the body would build immunity to the tetanus through through the shot. Adults starting the vaccine for the first time require 3 doses, the first 2 4 weeks apart and the 3rd 6-12 mos later. So if he has never been immunized it would take while before his body would build immunity.

The Tetanus shot only protects against the tetanus bacteria.

Expecting #9.  Always busy hsing.

Although it doesn't sound like a high-risk tetanus injury the "get it now" shot for tetanus is the immuno-globulin antibody shot. It provides protection against tetanus immediately following an injury but does not provide long-term immunity. There are risks associated with this shot as well:

Also, tetanus spores can only grow in a zero-oxygen environment. So, the bleeding means that the spores are more likely to have contacted the air. This is why puncture and crush wounds are more likely to develop tetanus. You are probably past this point but Hydrogen Peroxide send oxygen into a wound and can also kill tetanus spores.

Oh, they'll give you the shot, my point was that the booster is worthless.

Rust has nothing to do with tetanus.

I wouldn't even consider tetanus a risk at all with the wound you describe.

I agree with PP's...Doesn't sound like it's needed. Just keep it clean and air it out.

If the people let government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take, their bodies will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls of those who live under tyranny." Thomas Jefferson.
