I've posted several times about the fact that our 14 mo dd is unvaxed and we will be traveling to East Africa, so we are in the process of trying to figure out which vaxes, if any, we will get her.
My mom is horrified that we are considering taking her to Kenya unvaxed, she is trying to persuade us to at least go discuss this with a dr.
she recently went to an integrative dr who combines traditional and alternative medicine. this dr has patients who don't vaccinate, so my mom suggested we set up a consultation with her.
However, this doctor recommended that my mom get the H1N1 vax (she has asthma so is "high risk") and recommended that she start allergy shots for her seasonal allergies.
to be honest, this makes me not trust her advice - I just don't understand how anyone who knows the facts could recommend the H1N1 vax.
I wouldn't mind talking to a dr because we are still undecided, but I would want to talk to a dr who is knowledgeable about vax issues and also who doesn't think Africa is a dark and dreadful continent with disease and death around every corner (which is how many americans tend to view it )
Any advice on how I could find such a dr? my dd's dr is supportive that we don't vax but he's not really knowledgeable on the issue.

When I go to a doctor trained in traditional Western medicine, I pretty much expect them to advocate vaccination. That's what they are trained to do. I don't have a problem separating that from the other issues I see them for.
Also, I lived in Africa for three years. I wouldn't be comfortable taking my kids there completely unvaccinated.
I wouldn't vax, regardless of where we were traveling to. I'm not sure what seeing a pro-vax doctor would do, other than supply you with the reasons that she has to vax (and you probably already know all of her reasons).
2. In today's medicine, we have to do all of our own research. I'm sure you researched your vax choice, so now you get to research Vax & visiting Africa.
|My doc is pro-vax and I absolutely go to her for advice on other stuff and take that advice, too. She knows we are delay/selective and has never made an issue of it. I like her a lot and she was great recently with ds1's funky infected finger, ds2's weird rash, ds1's sudden blinding headache, etc.|

I lived in Nairobi for 3 years which is where we will be staying. There is clean water, excellent hygiene, and great medical facilities. In my research, I can't find evidence that she will be at higher risk of any VPDs where we will be. But just because it's "africa" it's assumed that there is so much disease. Many of the illnesses that she is most likely to be exposed to - i.e. diarrheal diseases - there aren't vaxes for anyway.
|I would expect that a doctor who is pro-vax will give you every reason in the book to get almost every vax, regardless of the reason|

I feel like our default position is not vaxing unless we find she is at high risk of catching a disease and high risk of having serious or life long complications from that disease. So far, no disease has met this criteria for us to consider it. But it would be nice to talk to a dr who understands our position to see if there might be something we are overlooking

You are right that it depends a lot on where you would be. And in your case, you would have access to care. I lived in Morocco. I'm fine not vaccinating my kids for measles here, because in the event of complications I have access to medical care. But if I were back in a village in the Atlas mountains, six hours from a city, and my kid were to be the rare measles complication case - well, I wouldn't be comfortable with that.
It's probably easier to just look up the specific area and each disease and decide for yourself if the risk is really that high. Don't forget to consider that many vaccines don't even prevent the disease, so weigh in that risk as well. No point injecting questionable ingredients if they're not likely to have any real benefit.
Plus, if this doctor is open to alt vax or no vax, then s/he should be able to work with you to provide suggestions on food prep and hygiene standards based on your needs and desires.
Having said all of that, it may very well just be your mom's "guess" that this doc is open to non vaxing. That is definitely worth exploring before going any further.

Perhaps try to see a good naturopathic Dr who takes an entire case history and treats each patient individually. I was having the same issues with so called "integrative drs." Once i took my ds to an ND and she heard the complete case history I was actually surprised and relieved she recommended NO more vaccines......maybe ask in finding your tribe section of mothering.com for an ND in your area-difference being you'll have to likely pay out of pocket......
