Hi there, our DD is a four month old unvaxxed baby and we're considering travel to California. Should we be concerned about the Pertussis "outbreak" there?

I think only you can answer that question. :-) My daughter is 2 and non-vaxed. Where I live there is apparently an outbreak, but I've yet to meet or see anyone with it... so I guess they are hiding.

My suggestion is to read up about it, consider where you plan to spend your time (overly public areas, parks, with family..etc), and make your decision off of that.

I just wanted to throw out that I also have an unvaxed 4 month old... and live in CA I only personally know one baby that has had whooping cough. And he was vaccinated

I wonder if it's anything like the SARS "outbreak" in Toronto. The whole world was terrified but neither me, nor any of my friends and family had ever met anyone who actually contracted it.

We won't be in public places nor will we be around other children so I'm thinking our chances are pretty low of coming into contact with Pertussis. But of course, I'm a mom so I worry a little...

I live in CA and have a large/broad social network. I see signs posted all over telling us that pertussis is on the rise and to hurry up and get our vaccines. But I haven't seen or heard of anyone getting it.

So I wouldn't get the vaccine based on the "outbreak". But pertussis does exist and is out there. So you need to decide if it's a vax that you feel is worth getting (my family is no-vax and decided against it fwiw).

i wouldnt. under 6 months it can be fatal. my 8 month old is getting over a runny nose and cough and it is hell, i cant imagine pertussis. my son is unvaxed too, but there is no outbreak here in ny. I am careful with where i take my kids when they are small, thats a serious disease. (imo) hope that helps.

the "immunity" from the vax doesnt come until the entire series is given, which if you folow the schedule, would be at 6mths old. The fatality concerns are primarily for babies 0-6 mths from what I understand so it never made sense to me. In your situation, dd is already 4 months old and you would only get the "immunity" if you gave all three shots, which would take at least 4 months. just food for thought

I'm in San Diego and my son goes to public elementary school. I haven't heard anything about there being any cases in his school.

The 9 cases of pertussis resulting in deaths during this "outbreak" were in Hispanic infants for some reason, and I have read speculation that the cases were in areas with heavy pesticide exposure.

Precisely! California will still be there in a year or two or three, so why the rush? Enjoy your babe!
