My sister is going to be off to college in the fall. She is looking to avoid vaccines. She is however vaccinated from early childhood. She is not a religious person, so Im not sure she could use that. Please help!

I did put this in the finding your tribe area as well.

NY only has religious exemptions (and medical) so she would have to use it if she wants to try and avoid whatever vaccines are required for her college. You don't have to be "religious" to file an exemption, however NY is known for being quite difficult

Religious exemption is, unfortunately, her only option in NYS.

(Medical exemption is vaccine-specific and will not apply across the board.)

It really depends on the school, so she should start by determining their requirements. Colleges are not the same as public schools in NY ... some will not require vaccines/records, and some will.

My son's (community) college, for instance, required proof of UTD tetanus, and proof of a recent TB test. They "strongly encourage" a meningitis vaccine. Because he hadn't an exemption on file in high school (he was vaccinated until 7th grade), they flatly refused to accept a new one. I was prepared to fight that, but we doscovered that DS's tetanus was technically UTD (though close), and he decided on his own to go ahead and have the TB test.

My daughter attends a state university. I'm not certain of their requirements, but I suspect that they require meningitis, because many colleges do now. After the ordeal with my son, I made certain that all of my kids had exemptions on file with their school district. Colleges seem more willing to accept an in-place exemption in lieu of records. DD had a little hiccup with her school over vaccine records, but I just told her to state that she had an exemption on file with her school district and that she could provide the college with a copy. They accepted that with no problem.

Your sister, otoh, will have to file a new exemption. She needs to be extremely careful with the wording. She cannot object to individual ingredients (i.e., aborted fetal tissue), because that is considered philosophical exemption. The wording should be vague enough to be "spiritual" rather than "religious", and she is under NO obligation to have an affiliation with any religious group or denomination. My son's school tried to insist that I must provide proof of membership and a letter from a pastor, but NYS ruled that unnecessary.

Good luck to her. NY is so tricky to navigate with regard to vaccine exemption.
