My husband is going back to school this fall and is required to get an mmr and I think hep b as well.

He is attending school in NY (suny). I don't know if he can possibly get out of doing it. Or if he is willing to figure out how.

So, I am worried for him. How bad do you think this vaccine is for adults? I feel anxious and depressed whenever I think of this. Partly because the process of opting out is confusing and intimidating and also because it's not even my decision but I'm afraid of what it will do to his health.

"Persons who hold genuine and sincere religious beliefs which are contrary to immunization may be exempt after submitting a statement to that effect."

http://www.suny.edu/sunypp/documents.cfm?doc_id=55

Notice that it didn't say anything about membership in a specific church (or any church).

Thank you. I feel so dumb- when I was looking into it, I didn't spot this. I have been told that's it's really tough to get an exemption in New York (we just moved here), so I felt discouraged from the start.

My daughter attends a SUNY school, but she had an exemption on file in high school so that just was submitted with her transcripts in lieu of vaccine records.

You need to be very, very careful with wording a request for religious exemption in NYS. Best to make it more "spiritual" than "religious" so that your beliefs cannot be brought into question.

That is not a requirement for religious exemption.

But I pointed that out because many people believe it is a requirement. Some states actually say it is required, but that is unconstitutional, and is usually not enforced.

I'm confused about wording it so that it's not overtly a particular religion, which would mean being kind of vague, and being clear enough to be accepted.

Also, this is for a dental school. I am wondering if that will make it harder.

I would write,

To Whom it May Concern:

I hold genuine and sincere religious beliefs which are contrary to immunization.

Sincerely,

If you can't get him to do an exemption, perhaps titers will suffice.

I have a 30 year old cousin (had 2 MMR as a kid) who needs 2 more classes to complete her Masters Degree.  The college sent her a medical notice about getting another MMR.  She is denied access to her classes until she gets vaxed!  My cousin took a titers test and the school reported that the mumps levels are just below the passing number!!!  After being enrolled for 3 years, the school now throws this "requirement" at her.  irked.gif

so she took what the school said about the titer test at face value or did she get her numbers, and check the state stats herself?   Schools are notorious for lying and bending truths
