This is for 8 year olds in 2010. This is an increase of 30% in TWO years. 1.2 million people under the age of 21 have ASD.

Quote:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 1 in 68 children (or 14.7 per 1,000 eight-year-olds) in multiple communities in the United States has been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).  This new estimate is roughly 30 percent higher than previous estimates reported in 2012 of 1 in 88 children (11.3 per 1,000 eight year olds) being identified with an autism spectrum disorder.    The number of children identified with ASD ranged from 1 in 175 children in Alabama to 1 in 45 children in New Jersey.

Thinking Moms Revolution statement on the new CDC figures:

Quote:

The new autism numbers, 1:68, are a national disgrace.  The medical establishment, the government and those we trust to protect our children have failed miserably.  The reality is we are no closer today than we were 25 years ago to knowing what causes autism or how to cure it.

While Rome burns, our leadership is fiddling with this autism crisis, and our children are paying the price.  The numbers speak for themselves.  Autism rates have soared unchecked from 1 in 10,000 in 1980 to today’s new number of 1 in 68.  We are  destroying generations of children, and it is time to make preventing and curing autism priority one as a nation.

The sad reality is we cannot trust the medical establishment or the government. We are on our own to stop this destruction of the planets most important resource - its children.

The reuters article has an expert interviewed saying that it may stabilize in 2% of the population (1:50). I wonder how this may change human evolution?

You mean, because of the changes in diagnostic criteria for autism in DSM V, which will limit diagnoses?

Sort of like the war on cancer, right? Whenever the USA declares a war on something, it really means that it will spend tons of money and never end. If left up to the organizations that are supposed to protect us, we will NEVER see an end to these phony wars--wars that were never intended to be won in the first place!!

Mirzam, you are right--we are on our own, and it is up to the people to figure this out and make positive changes. The organizations in charge of protecting the citizens are no longer trustworthy. Some will make excuses for the broken system, but others will see a need for change, and actively seek  solutions.

I agree.

I do think science (for lack of a better word) is very capable of great discoveries that can help people - antibiotics, smoking is bad, insulin, proper sewage disposal…..In a way I remain optimistic that we can figure out what is causing this.

OTOH, autism is so complex, and  there is so much politics and powerful lobby groups involved with things such as vaccines, pesticides, etc that we are no where close to finding science and government approved ways of prevent, treat or cure autsim.  I think we are on our own, and will be a long, long time.
