I was reading elsewhere about one kid having 13 ear infections by the time they were 11 months old. Then, there is one kid in my playgroup that is always missing the group because he's has a stomach bug and 2 ear infections in the last month. Another just developed asthma and eczema and the doc wants to put them on meds. The 1st 2 kids live pretty close to me and only 1 is in daycare, the ladder is somewhere but all are vaccinated on schedule.
It makes me think back to the 2 month appt with my pedi who tried to convince me the Hib vax was good for ear infections too. I refused but wonder how many ear infections my son might have had...
I've been playing the what if game lately. I wonder how many kids could have avoided all those infections, fevers, disorders, ect. Of course, we'll never know but I would love to do a study on this (if I had the money).
A couple of colds
A couple of stomach bugs (usually the pukey variety)
A few "unknown" viruses where she runs a high fever and no other real symptoms.
That's about it.
She'll be 4yrs in August.

DS#2-ear infections we couldn't seem to get rid of (come to find out it was his teething causing pain..that's it)...
-had to do the TED because of believed food allergies (turned out no food issues)....
-has eczema and severe asthma and is on major steriod meds for his asthma which cause him to be immunocompromised.
-We are currently trying to figure out why he's not gaining weight. He's 3.5 and still weighs 31 lbs...so hasn't gained a single lb in 1.5 yrs. Will probably have to put him back on pediasure and/or pumped breastmilk (in addition to his normal foods) because he's just not eating/gaining.
-No colds, maybe 1 stomach bug ever.. completely non-vaccinated.
DD- never been really sick. got her brothers' stomach bug once-lasted a day or so. that's it. completely non-vaccinated.
Grace, age 8, partially vaxed till 14 mo
had 1 double ear infection
she has had strep throat and pink eye
she has had about 1 pukey bug per year
she has had 2 or 3 fever bugs total
I would say she's had less than 1 cold per year, average
Lily, age 5, non vaccinated
has never had an ear infection
she has had one sinus infection
she has had about 1 pukey bug per year
she has had influenza A
seems to catch more colds than Grace or Felicity, but still not often
Felicity, age 2, non vaccinated
has never had an ear infection
she has had 2 pukey bugs
she has had 2 fever bugs
she has had 2 or 3 fever bugs
She has had influenza A
less than 1 cold per year, average
She's had more illness in general but she got most vaxes until 3mo when I figured out the truth. ALso she's been in daycare and dd2 has not.
colds and coughs
(These have now been avoided for a while because I've discovered homeopathic remedies that help a lot - I used to be more mainstream until I got myself educated.)
No ear infections ever (she's 2.5)
No stomach bugs
one fever with no other symptoms
one almost ear infection but got it knocked out early
no stomach bugs
None have had an ear infection or rather no signs of one. They've all had stomach viruses (the youngest has only had one), other un-none viruses/colds. My dd did have bacterial pnemonia (sp?) when she was a newborn (5 weeks), she did have the hep B in the hospital.
My dd has had antibiotics twice once for the pnemonia and one other time for a sinus infection years later (she's 11). The other two have never had antibiotics (almost 7 yrs. old and 18 mths old) .
My older son does seem to have psorasis like me (very mild for both of us).
RSV - Twice
Ear Infections - 8
High Fever (105 or higher) - 2
Respiratory Infections - at least 9.
Rotavirus - Once, currently. (going on 6 days now...)
Strep throat - Once (even though no one else in our family had it!)
For the first 9 months of her life, she was diagnosed with a respiratory infection EVERY month. It would go away, she would be fine for about two weeks and then get sick again.
DD's , age 5 and 4 -
- A few colds
- Whooping cough
- A few stomach bugs
Mom of Many
Rotavirus at 9 mos
Chicken pox at 4.5 yrs
A few coughs, colds and the odd sore throat
DD#2 (10), unvaxed
Rotavirus at 16 mos
Chicken pox at 8
Flu, colds, sore throat
Suspected (by me) very mild case of pertussis
DS (8), unvaxed
Fifths Disease at 6
Chicken Pox at 6
A couple of colds
Suspected very mild case of pertussis
A stomach "thing" which was brought on by the stress of seeing someone slice their finger off, lasted a few hours but was intense.
"If you find from your own experience that something is a fact and it contradicts what some authority has written down, then you must abandon the authority and base your reasoning on your own findings"~ Leonardo da Vinci
She has had one virus that I got after her. It consisted of a high fever, terrible body aches, and an extremely sore throat.
She had one fever of around 101 that seemed to have no other symptoms (she didn't seem sick - just had an obvious fever) followed by a non-specific rash.
And that is it (knock on wood). No colds, or stomach viruses of any sort yet.
2 tummy bugs that involved 1 evening of vomiting each - no loose stools
1 Case of the sniffles
3 Colds (all since she started preschool)
That's it in 4 years...a healthy immune system is a wonderful thing!
a few colds
a few coughs
one ear inf. with conjunctivitis same time
hasn't had a fever yet
no stomach virus type stuff either
DS: age 5
had all vax thru age 18 mos.
A couple ear infections as a baby
Stomach virus type stuff
Strep throat a few times
Both kids are/were nursed, DS did CLW
I am a school nurse so I do know I've brought stuff home to the kids! Overall though, both super healthy!
Strep a couple times
1 cold when he was just over 6 mos old (lasted about a week or so)
got the sniffles for a day or so a few days after i had the flu (self-diagnosed-never went to doc)
no ear infections
no real diaper rash (a few red bums here and there, but no all-out rash)
no allergies that we're aware of...still exclusively bf'd
good thread ...neat to see other people's experiences, esp those who have 2+ kids with different vax histories...:
DS#2-We are currently trying to figure out why he's not gaining weight. He's 3.5 and still weighs 31 lbs...so hasn't gained a single lb in 1.5 yrs. Will probably have to put him back on pediasure and/or pumped breastmilk (in addition to his normal foods) because he's just not eating/gaining.
22lb at 1
25lb at 2
30lb at 3
32lb at 4
33lb at 5
35lb turning 6 june 1st
dd had up to her 2year shots
few bugs, ear infections, many thoat things, few fevers, snuffles, colds
had to have meds more then once...
few fevers, snuffles, few stomach bugs more via poop then throwing up but over all nothing to rememberalbe
They did have:
- Roseola - both
- Stomach bugs - both a couple, older one actually got a severe one once (an outbreak in a family camp with a lot of people sick)
- some slow virus, but not EBV (older one)
- Strep A with Scarlet fever (little one)
- A few 24-48 hour episodes of 'who knows what' with just fever and not much else - both.
A few fevers
I have been amazed at how different his immune system works than my older kids. He will spike a fever and have it for maybe 12 hours and then get better. Never really turns into anything else. We are still dealing with pertussis, has not really been a big deal. The bigger deal is feeling like I can't tell people why he coughs the way he does. Because you know the moms that vax just freak out!:

Just say it's croup...most people don't know the difference and there is no vax for it...so what can they say?
DS is 8 months and vax free. He has not had anything yet. Not a couch. Runny nose. Nothing.
My story too!
DS 8 months, no vax's no sicknesses until....I was at a friends house and her son had a cold (argh!!!) she didn't tell me until after, and my DS was checking out her DS's teeth then putting his hands in his own mouth, so we have a runny nose, but still sleeping through the night and napping...fingers crossed!
dd1, who is 3 years old: Nothing until 9 months (when we went to Chicago via airplane, I certain that's why she got sick)
2 ear infections, not treated with antibiotics, just breastmilk and garlic oil in the ear. High fever (104.5 was the highest!!!) Motrin for pain relief.
6ish colds, no fever, just runny nose for a few days.
1 Viral tummy bug at 20 months, runny poo and vomiting for 4 days!
dd2, who is 3 months old:
1 cold (from big sister) just stuffy nose, no fever or anything else
I am always amazed at how differently non-vaxed kids fight infection. I'm pretty lax about fevers, and let them get high without medicating. Unless she is in pain or under a lot of stress, I don't normally do motrin. She will spike a HIGH fever for 12 hours and then she is fine. None of her colds have dragged on and on like I see in vaxxed kids. Interesting.
DCP to 1 busy munchkin! and a CRST too!
i put her in daycare (aka, the petri dish) part time (less than 20 hour a week) the week of her 1st b-day
within the 1st week she had an upper respiratory infection with a really high fever. had green snot for about a week and a lingering cough for about 2 weeks.
over the last few days, she's been teething something awful, mid-grade fever x 48+ hours, and last night it manifested into an ear infection- i ended up taking her to the ER b/c of her shrill cry and elevating temp, but the ear infection was caught super early according to the doc. i'm taking her to her DO tomorrow to get an adjustment to help the drainage in her ear. she's actually in really good spirits despite this :
that's it so far *knocks on wood*, i'm just hoping dd doesn't fall ill every month like this on a regular basis.
so far he's had...
-1 double ear infection
not awful, but certainly not sickie-free either.
