My cousin's wife whose daughters are 10 and 12 mentioned that they do this now. Have everyone bring a recently read "good" book to the party (rather than a present) and then they are swapped so that everyone goes home with a "gift" and something new to read. Encourages reading and less consumerism. Nice!
Great one! I was thinking of doing something similar for our next birthday with a toy swap, but need to think further about the ages of the kids invited, and whether it could really work. Books are much more straightforward.
